Textbook approvals hi-jacked by conservative board members
Austin is experiencing some serious growing pains these days. Ahhh for the good ole days when liberals and Willie Nelson were who you'd most likely run into.

Although this is merely an editorial, I do hope the good folks of Austin , and everywhere else this is happening, fight back to prevent these zealots from establishing de facto Madrasas via our school systems.

1. It's not the Austinites pressuring the textbook board
It's the fundamentalist Christians from the Southeast. My town is the central of this bad activity. Look for information on the Republican Leadership Council. They tried to ban books last year, had a copy of the statue of David "fig-leafed" (it was on private! property), and are pimping intelligent design, which in their minds is the same as creationism. It isn't, but they're using it as a front to get Genesis taught in schoolbooks.

4. Fenris is not kidding
We suffer under the burden of living in a county that is three to one repugnant. Censorship in our library system was barely avoided last summer.

3. Our texas approved books
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 05:35 PM by Trek234
Sound like McCarthy wrote them. They are BRAND NEW this year and I swear to god they compare the US and the Soviets so much it's not even funny. "The US is better than the soviets in this way because of X" "The US is better compared to the soviets here too!" "Labor unions bad" "Here Bush is lowering taxes"

6. That editorial was extremely depressing
I can't believe I live in a country where science is under attack. And sadly, most Murkin idiots (espicially in red states) don't see why this is a problem.

7. Society goes through cycles . . .
. . of reformation and renaissance. Reformation promotes hatred, bigotry, war and violence against those who disgree with you - or are different in some way.

Renaissance promotes equality, fairness, compromise, the common good, science, artistic beauty.

Guess which is the party of reformation - which is renaissance.

Guess which set of values are overtaking our society at this moment.
