Jim Hodges endorses Clark
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 09:59 AM by returnable
The former governor of South Carolina throws his considerable support behind Wes Clark.

This is an extremely big deal in a key primary state. Congratulations to Team Clark :toast:

1. You mean Hodges isn't supporting our president?
You remember in 2001 when it was feared Strom Thurmond would die in office, and Hodges said flat out he would not appoint a Democrat to fill his seat? Also, he went on to insult the national Democrats.

I guess losing his own election had a way of making him come around.

Nevertheless, I'm glad to see this! good news.

2. Hodges is one of us (+/-), but...
he governed a very conservative state. The Strom thing was a desperation move. Trying to hold on to his office.

While this endorsement helps up in the primaries, it may hurt in the general (but SC would very likely go to Bush under any circumstances - Clark is the only Dem with a chance to beat
Bush here). Hodges was extremely unpopular with whites in SC. His election was a fluke, having more to do with his predecessor more than himself. Still, this sure helps secure the black vote, and SC's population is one third black.

I'll attend the endorsement event this afternoon. I'll report on it tonight.

7. I think this bodes well for Clark's coat-tails in the South
We need to those seats. And I don't think any of the other candidates, except maybe Edwards, could provide as large coat-tails in that region.
