There will be Democracy in the Middle East and happiness ever after...
Lest we forget that there was a democracy in the Middle East at one time but our CIA overthrew it and put in the Shah of Iran? But the illusions and delusions of this Administration continue to put this nation and the world at risk.

Democracies are not guaranteed to be immortal or to live forever. So what is to keep a general from overthrowing the newly democratically elected leader of Iraq when it happens? Unless we stand over them at all times with military security to guarantee their safety? With our troops standing at the door at all times? And even then, what is to keep a military coup from happening or a coup by the religious fanatics?

Unfortunately, this group in power in the WH are under illusions that somehow it will be like magic and everything will be hunky-dory once we get a "democracy" installed in Iraq. That will only be the beginning of our problems. I fear that there are many more battles to be fought in Iraq and the Middle East and democracy is not the answer to their problems. The Administration is deluding themselves and fooling the American people in trying to make them think that installing a "democracy" will solve the mess we have made in that part of the world.

1. The standard Right Wing response to this is...
"willtoowilltoowilltoo! So there!"

(props to Ductape Fatwa for recently characterizing this sort of 'magical thinking' so succinctly...)

3. Bush don't know democracy
some issues I have with Bush's peace plan

--his daddy was the 20th century king of propping up authoritarian regimes. Bush the 1st also seems to turn on a number of his former "friends" including Noriega and Sadam. First he supports their dictatorial regimes, sells them weapons, then decides they are too dangerous and decides to wage war. At least the Bushies still get along with the royal family in Saudi Arabia, so we don't need to worry about them (or democracy in Saudi Arabia) at the moment.
--watch "the Panama Deception" and see the trial run of "a Bush installs much-needed democracy in poor country".
--installing democracy is an oxymoron.
--we still need to work on democracy in this country.
