FOR SECURITY COMMITTEE MEMO.
This is a horrible spectable of the majority of repugs putting down the democrats and actually calling the event "treasonous".

And the lazy, compliant press gives this nonstory wings.
The real story is that the GOP members of the committee are doing everything they can to avoid investigating what the White House did with the intelligence they received--did they twist it to achieve the outcome they wanted--a trumped up case for war in Iraq.

that would much more interesting. And would be glad to give it to them. There's no need for them to go thru the garbage. Basically, we do not want the Repubs to think they can cover up this investigation and if they don't do their job, we will do it for them. They can whine and pout all they want. The American people deserve the truth and we are going to do our damnedest to give it to them. Got a problem with that?

Who here believes these people are smart enough to be on the intelligence committee? If this is how they are reading the memo I say they aren't smart enough for the jobs they have, they need to be fired!
Bond brought up how someone in his office said it was a witch hunt :wtf: they are mad! I tell you, mad! Hello.....Clinton, now that was a eight year witch hunt!

32. Let's break the memo down |
|
"We have carefully reviewed our options under the rules and believe we have identified the best approach. Our plan is as follows:
1) Pull the majority along as far as we can on issues that may lead to major new disclosures regarding improper or questionable conduct by administration officials. We are having some success in that regard."
Good. I'm glad to see the Dems carefully review options "under the rules" on how to present intelligence gathered that lead to war and death. I guess the majority is upset that the Dems are "pulling" them along towards major new disclosures that will shed improper or questionable conduct by Bush and his cabal. Perhaps this is WHY the republicans are so upset right now.
"For example, in addition to the President's State of the Union speech, the chairman has agreed to look at the activities of the office of the Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, as well as Secretary Bolton's office at the State Department.
The fact that the chairman supports our investigations into these offices and cosigns our requests for information is helpful and potentially crucial. We don't know what we will find but our prospects for getting the access we seek is far greater when we have the backing of the majority."
I'm thrilled to see the Senate Intel Comte. investigating the offices of Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Bolton. As we all know, the Office of Special Plans plays a key role in the intelligence Bush used. It's also heartwarming to know that Rockefeller thinks the support of the SSIC's chairman will help garner "far greater access" to the crucial information they need for it to be a thorough investigation.
"2) Assiduously prepare Democratic 'additional views' to attach to any interim or final reports the committee may release. Committee rules provide this opportunity and we intend to take full advantage of it.
In that regard we may have already compiled all the public statements on Iraq made by senior administration officials. We will identify the most exaggerated claims. We will contrast them with the intelligence estimates that have since been declassified. Our additional views will also, among other things, castigate the majority for seeking to limit the scope of the inquiry.
The Democrats will then be in a strong position to reopen the question of establishing an Independent Commission."
Whoa Nellie! The Democrats are taking advantage of a Committee rule and attaching additional views to the interim report! I'm shocked, just shocked that this is going on. It also appears the Dems have damning evidence that will show the administration exaggerated claims to go to war. No wonder republicans are stonewalling this investigation and trying to discredit Rockefeller.
"3) Prepare to launch an independent investigation when it becomes clear we have exhausted the opportunity to usefully collaborate with the majority. We can pull the trigger on an independent investigation of the administration's use of intelligence at any time. But we can only do so once."
Why the audacity of the Dems! How dare they want an independent investigation because the majority is stonewalling!
"B) Once we identify solid leads the majority does not want to pursue, we would attract more coverage and have greater credibility in that context than one in which we simply launch an independent investigation based on principled but vague notions regarding the use of intelligence."
How DARE the Dems seek greater awareness and want to be sure their call for an independent investigation has credibility behind it! Why I never! That's not how government is run these days!
"In the meantime, even without a specifically authorized independent investigation, we continue to act independently when we encounter footdragging on the part of the majority. For example, the FBI Niger investigation was done solely at the request of the vice chairman. We have independently submitted written requests to the DOD and we are preparing further independent requests for information."
I'd say this is a classic example of how the Republicans are stonewalling. Thanks goodness the minority on the SSIC has the power to authorize independent investigations.
"SUMMARY: Intelligence issues are clearly secondary to the public's concern regarding the insurgency in Iraq. Yet we have an important role to play in revealing the misleading, if not flagrantly dishonest, methods and motives of senior administration officials who made the case for unilateral preemptive war.
I'd say intelligence issues have a direct bearing on the public's concern regarding the insurgency in Iraq. The public has a right to know if this administration used "flagrantly dishonest" methods and motives when making a case for unilateral, preemptive war. Do we really want a lying, manipulative administration sending our kids to war in the future? A war that is obviously based on lies?

You either have to be with them or with the terrorists. As long as we put up with letting them put things in terms of either/or, I'm afraid we are going to have a nation divided with all non-Republicans (Libertarians, Greens, Reforms, Independents, and etc. as well as Democrats) are going to be cast in the role of the bad guys.
Of course if they wanted an investigation about what Clinton might have known...
