Clark Expects to Finish Year With $9.5M
SHARON THEIMER
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential hopeful Wesley Clark is confident he can finish the year with about $9.5 million raised despite his campaign's late start, his campaign said Friday.

Clark expects to take in about $6 million from October through December, on top of about $3.5 million raised in the first two weeks of his campaign in September, spokeswoman Kym Spell said.

Clark is holding two or three fund-raisers a day and "literally cannot hold as many fund- raisers as people want us to hold," Spell said. Clark's entry into the race came after months of urging by supporters, and months of campaigning and fund raising by his rivals.

The Clark campaign's optimism about its funding prospects comes as rival Howard Dean, who began his campaign last year, leans toward opting out of the Watergate-era public financing system and its spending limits.

note: Dean has already raised $5 million this quarter.

1. I like that Clark is going after both the high and low dollar donors
He's got the Eagles concert and the ZIPcode Drive to cover those who can afford expensive tickets as well as those who can only make $10 donations, rewarding both groups. He can get influential crowd magnets like the Eagles to help him, and his many grassroots across the country as well.

He's just now starting, and yet he's doing better that some who have been in the race for over a year. He's got a great ability to improve and he's always succeeded at whatever he's tried. He won the state championship even when he was handicapped with having one swimmer short of a swim team, no coach and no swimming pool to start with :)

2. is $10 the minimum donation for the entire campaign…
or does that just apply to the zipcode fundraiser?

4. Just for the zipcode
You can donate as little or as much (up to limit of $2000) as you want. But if you donate over $10 online, you and your zipcode will be entered into the contest.

6. that's what I figured
I mean, I really can't imagine a candidate rejecting a donation for being "too small".

3. I would love to know how much of that 5 million Dean has raised
is from Bush supporters wanting the Flim Flam man to get the nominee.

28. I hardly think it is zero.
In the one article about Dean (Newsweek or Businessweek) Bush supporter admitted to doing just that.

30. Probably in the low thousands of dollars.
I know I have heard of some Republicans doing it, but I think they are misguided when they do and may live to regret it. Democrats were salivating over the prospect of running against that crazy, old, right-wing kook Ronald Reagan you know.

34. reports of repub $$$
have surfaced on the blog, but I've never gone back to ask for a link. There was a link to some freeper conversations reporting their joy with Dean, and suggesting they show support with their wallets. It's hard to define the limits to rovian mendacity.

7. $6 million is impressive (compared to Kerry et al)…
but honestly, I expected Clark to do much better than this. I was thinking he'd raise in the ballpark of $15-$20 million.

I don't see how he can even contemplate opting out if he's only gonna raise $6 million this quarter.

10. Yeah having your cousin and his pals trash Dean on message boards...

can only go so far.

But CLark doesn;t have to spend much since he has Sharpton and Kerry and Edwards and Lieberman all spending their money to attack Dean.

11. I'd bet well over 50%

I recall somethign awhile back about Clark not attending a debate because he was meeting behind closed doors with his big money doners.

It is a shame Clark is not as open with hsi supporters about where his money comes from as Dean is.

What debate was that? He's been in all of the debates since he announced. If you are trying to baffle us with BS, at least provide a link.

19. It's a shame Dean's
not open and above board with his supporters in his bush like sealing of his records, it's really a shame we're all going to have to wait for KKKarl to let us all know just what dark little secrets the fair haired wannabe feels is simply too embarrassing for his own supporters to know about.

9. Where is the money coming from?

Is Clark taking PAC and special interest money?

Does he tell his supporters where the money is coming from, like Dean does?

22. that's a valid question, Clark should answer it
As much as I don't like Dean, I'm glad they are public with where the money is coming from and who the donors are, or at least it seems that way. Clark really should be posting this stuff on his own websites and making sure it's public and accessible to anyone who wants to support him.

15. I wonder..
if he's purposely underestimating himself, so that when he raises more he can make a big deal about it.

I also wonder how much of the party's big-time machinery is behind him.

16. Everytime somone posts an attack on Clark...
I donate. Everytime I feel a little less hopeful about Clark winning I donate. It always makes me feel better. I really want Clark to get the nomination because regardless of the fact he hasn't held office I know he is the right person to help the US become a more internationally respected nation. He's the right cleanup guy after the mess Bush has made.

More good news - the new Newsweek poll will come out showing Dean and Clark tied.

Despite the fact the the media is trying to "Gore" Clark...he is still up there.

How do you think Clark will do in the Oklahoma primary?

If he wins I may even (choke) root for OU next year.

27. Hard to predict right now
It would be natural for a neighbor to do well. The campaign is just now starting to get off the ground. Most everything now is being done by grassroots groups. Last Monday was the first big organization meeting ( from Little Rock group), with assignments of leaders, etc.

From a strictly amateurs look, I see the leaders here: Edwards, Clark, Gephardt. I don't hear any buzz about Dean, but that doesn't mean anything because I am isolated in Tulsa and not near his natural constituancy.

I don't know why there is no talk about Oklahoma. We actually have one more delegate than South Carolina. ( 59 to 60 ) It could be because the primary doesn't actually decide the delegate breakdown.
After the primary is a state Democratic convention. Sometimes there can be some wild and wooly stuff going on.

There is an old joke that Oklahomans get involved in politics because, with the exception of football, there's not much else to do.

Anyway, most of the hot and heavy politics occurs in the Eastern part of the state. That's because that is where the tribal organizations are, and where there is a stronger union presence and because that part of the state is where there is a strong populist streak.

I think he is trying to set expectations really low just to surprise everyone.
