Kerry To End Monopoly Of Medical Marijuana Research
Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry is supporting the University of Massachusetts' effort to grow marijuana for medical research.

Currently the University of Mississippi is the only legal grower of marijuana for research. Kerry and fellow Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy say that amounts to an "unjustifiable monopoly."

In a letter to the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration dated Oct. 20, Kerry and Kennedy wrote, "The current lack of such competition may well result in the production of lower-quality research-grade marijuana, which in turn jeopardizes important research into the therapeutic effects of marijuana for patients undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from AIDS, glaucoma or other diseases."

Kerry has said if elected president, he would stop federal raids of medical marijuana patients until completion of a scientific study of the benefits. Granite Staters for Medical Marijuana gives Kerry a B+ for his views — only long-shot Democratic candidates Dennis Kucinich and Carol Moseley Braun get higher grades.

4. All our candidates should be supporting something like this
The real step is getting rid of our war on drugs, but stopping the raids on MM patients definitely needs to be done.

5. One of my wife's few remaining family members is dying of cancer...
...It has spread throughout her body, but hurts in her spine the most. She is in terrible pain. And she is afraid of breaking the law by smoking weed.

Nixon in 1972 learned that weed was harmless, for all intents and purposes, when used responsibly. He instead used it to further divide the country and started this cursed War on Drugs.

And it keeps my wife's cousin in pain. And afraid. Even in her last months.

6. The last thing that they would want to do is arrest her
Her well-being becomes their responsibility the second they put the cuffs on her.

11. Advice: bring her to Bend, Oregon, if you can
It's been rated the best place in America to leave the flesh, there are plenty of excellent hospices, and there's a good chance she could get on the Medical Marijuana Registry. The state and local cops don't even bother busting MM users, and they don't cooperate with the Feds.

8. I Wonder If All The Recent Confessions Will Open Up Dialogue On This
I really hope so. It's such a stupid, stupid thing to get so worked up about. I don't even smoke, but I'm a big libertarian when it comes to what you do in the privacy of your own home. And to mess with friggin' cancer patients is pretty low down.

13. Yesterday I was ready to give up on ever voting for Kerry
I've been bouncing between Dean and Clark for weeks now.

Today, I am officially a Kerry backer because of this issue.
