Gutless cowards. There can be no other term to describe the current crop of Democratic leaders and elected representatives. These people lack the courage to realize that the enemy is fighting to completely dismantle democracy and the guts to fight with what it takes.
When the democratic process ceases to be effective then it is time not to give up but to make arguments by other means. Lacking majority control of the house and senate is not a justification to sit down, shut up, and take whatever abuse the ruling party decides to hand out. In Poland, Solidarity had no control over the political process and yet they fought and overthrew a totalitarian puppet government. Opposition forces in Zimbabwe have suffered greatly at the hands of Mugabe's thugs and yet they still fight.
When faced by the prospect of the extinction of the Democratic party and the death of the republic, what does the Democratic party do? Nothing. There is no organized protest from within the party. There is no mass message echoed by all members of the party that the Republican movement has become a threat to the American people. There is no mass message of support for people like Ted Kennedy who have spoken out. There are no mass demands that the unanswered questions regarding the administration's energy policy be answered. There are no mass demands that the unanswered questions regarding September 11 be answered. There are no mass demands that the administration act on corporate crime and the looting of private pensions. There are no mass demands that the administration come clean on its fiscal objectives. There are no mass demands for anything except that the party membership should keep calm, move on, and not ask questions while the Republican party builds a fascist state.
This lack of opposition is not for lack of public support. Millions marched in protest against the colonial occupation of Iraq. As the opposition party, the Democrats should have been not just participating in these, and other anti-Republican marches, but organizing them. A million people in the streets, organized by the opposition party of record, is not a political irrelevance.
The support for effective opposition is out there not only among the protesting classes but among the legions of apathetic citizens who do not vote. An opposition party which can prove itself to be distinct from the ruling olgiarchy will attract unregistered voters in numbers that will make fretting over the sub-%20 swing vote irrelevant.
It is time for the Democratic leadership to either find some courage or get out of the way and be replaced by people who aren't afraid to bite the hand that is beating them.

And has just as much to lose as the Rethugs. Toss them out, retire them or convict them to get some intellegent leadership on our side for a change.
