For Fighting the Religious Reich
http://www.elroy.net/ehr/fighttheright.html

"You're going to Hell!"
"Satan has blinded you!"

"If you support abortion, you are supporting murder!"

Have you been assaulted with statements such of these? Have your political views, your religious beliefs or your behaviors been targeted by such verbal abuse? Have you found yourself defending your choices against individuals so bent on their own agenda that nothing you say makes a difference? Chances are you are being attacked by Fundamentalist Christians.

Often called the "Religious Right," these people come from an extreme wing of the Christian Faith. Because of their growing number, many of them - as well as many non-Christians - believe they represent all of Christianity. Not true. These people represent a far-right position in a much larger spectrum of Christian believers. They are Fundamentalists. And by that definition, which they use, they have set themselves up as defenders of the "fundamentals" of the faith, as the guardians of righteousness, as soldiers of the truth.

Worried? You should be.

1. All my life, but unfortunately, it was my own religion that
made these accusations, the Catholics I went to school with. I can't remember the number of times I was told that I was in league with the devil, destined for Hell and that I was never going to amount to anything, yadda, yadda, yadda.

2. I am not surprised
I came to DU after posting on a site for seniors. The fundies had taken over the entire site. Soon, there were "asterisks" placed in front of religious threads. The asterisks meant that only "like minded" people could post in that particular thread. So, we had , in effect "churches" and each thread was happy and content to eliminate others from posting on their "religious" church thread. This resulted in people being totally banned from posting in those religious threads. Now, it is obvious that these seniors, as wise or as unwise as they may be, are not very accepting to discours. Each religion wants to keep itself separate and apart and wants to post prayers, songs and whatever on a restricted thread. But it goes further--moderators are fanatics in their relgions--they monitor the atheist thread and then report any "disrespect" to their fundamentalist religion to the "authorities" Apparently atheists are required to "respect" religion, when their philosophy does not dictate that.

Do not believe it when someone tells you that seniors are "wise". They are amongst the most entrenched and the most bigoted and the most narrow minded, living in the past people, I have had the displeasure to meet.

4. Well yes they are getting near to death. Sins raise it ulgy head.
Go to church it is filled with old people and few young. I used to be in a church that read and talked about new books, and one of the men made up mind what we could read. It is usually a church that lives and lets live. This was so odd for the 'Church of Christ' that I just did not go any more. One does not become good by going to church and as I get old the church is not going to rule what I will read. But the other old women just bowed to any thing this man wanted. Very strange. I had never run into this type thing in the congregationalist church. The church had an odd feeling of its power that I could not understand, or really write about and the book buiness just did it for me.

5. The place to send "Fundamentalists" :
Check out http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Fundamentalism where we show fundies that if they want to claim to be "Christians" they are tooting the wrong horn. They aren't promoting what Jesus preached.

Every single one of 'em. And they all get the Daily Talking Points and parrot them.

Here in Ventura County, aka "Reagan Country," they've taken over.
