AP: Clarkies help Deaniac shout down Bush supporters @ Arkansas college
Republican, Democrat Protestors Square Off

Monday November 10, 2003 4:00pm

Little Rock (AP) - About 40 Democratic protesters squared off against College Republicans down the street from the building where Bush is speaking at a fund-raiser.

The groups stood yelling and chanting at each other in a designated "free-speech zone" further down on President Clinton Avenue in downtown Little Rock.

About 35 volunteers and staffers from retired General Wesley Clark's campaign headquarters arrived to back up a lone Dean supporter who was being heckled by the Republicans from University of Central Arkansas.

would just go far far away. This is 100 loud people out of the entire student body. I doubt either made many converts.

A contest to see who can shout down the other group may give each side a sugar high but to those passing by, how dumb they all must have looked.

Interesting though there was only one Dean supporter. Does that show how Dean has only minimal supoort there, or that his supporter were grownup enough not to be drawn into this.

This incident did not happen on campus-- it was in downtown Little Rock. The University of Central Arkansas, where the repuke hecklers came from, is in Conway, 30 miles north of Little Rock.

23. I don't know why anyone's surprised, honestly.
Like I said before, previous threads have shown that Dean and Clark supporters have somewhat become Dean AND Clark supporters. For some reason, Deanies and Clarkies feel a kinship in this that's evident with no one else. Now there's a little of that in the real world.

Dean AND Clark. There's nothing else like it.

29. I thought the WHOLE COUNTRY was a "free Speech Zone"
whats with this administration and this kind of bullshit? ;-->The groups stood yelling and chanting at each other in a designated "free-speech zone" further down on President Clinton Avenue in downtown Little Rock.

I read an article about a woman that was confronted by police in Texas near a Bush event and they told her she had to move to the "Free Speech Zone". She replied, "The entire United states of America is a free speech zone and i am not moving!"

This hasnt been common practice with the Secret Service, has it been? I never heard of such a thing with Clinton or any other president for that matter. Anyone have any info?

37. Arkansas is the BUCKLE of the Bible Belt, too.
It is VERY telling for people to turn out here in protest of bu$h and to shout down the Hitler Youth. This should be one of the last places on Earth where dissent manifests; it oughta be absolutely safe ground for bu$h.

SOMEone's in serious trouble.

41. Remember, though, Arkansas is Clark's home state
and Little Rock is still a mostly Democratic town.

Now, if that happened in Benton, Crawford, Sebastian, Baxter, White or Boone counties, THEN it would be cause for Bu$h to be very worried.

43. Clarkies shouted down a bunch of Bushies at the Detroit...
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 07:48 AM by familydoctor
Debate outside the Fox Theatre. Only thing was,
it wasn't a "Free Speech Zone". The cops escorted
the Bushies away but they also took our signs.

I don't know about you, but I think the "Free Speech Zone"
stuff is more fascist bullshit.

We ended up taking our signs back (from where the cops
placed them) but we had to hide them.

Overall, I thought it was quite the scene having cops
suppress free speech of Democratic supporters at a
Democratic debate. All we wanted to do was cheer Clark.
Instead they called us demonstrators and protesters.

The only thing we protested was the collection of Bushies
that cheered their pathetic battle cry "Bush is gonna win!"
However, no one could hear them with our crescendo of "Clark,
Clark, Clark..."

'twas fun.
