Remembrance / Veterans Day Outrage.
I'm at work today because the markets are open. Canadian markets are open because today is not a federal holiday. Victoria Day is a federal holiday, so on that day I would not be at work. Victoria Day (May 24th) celebrates the birthday of Queen Victoria. Therefore a long dead woman's birthday is more important than countless millions of dead soldiers and civilians. That's not right. Today is a holiday, in the original sense of the word, a holy day. Why on earth would a dead royal take precedence over the worst disasters to befall mankind?

1. My guess......
Since God gave her the right to rule she is more important than the men who fought for her. They were not put there by God but by Gods ruler. The one with Gods hand on her is then very importand. Now I do not believe this only look how they used to rule.Thank God we did not live under the "Sun King" or Czar. She did have to do a little kowtowing to the people.

3. Then you've got the U.S. beat
Today banks and post offices are closed, but businesses are open.

I would bet money that the enormous majority of U.S. citizens have no clue what "11th month, 11th day, 11th hour" refers to. Probably all they know about World War I is that it came before World War II, and there are those who would flunk even that.

Drop by my blog this afternoon; I'm having Wilfred Owen Day today. (Poems not yet posted, but coming.)

4. It's the fact that Victoria Day is. That's the problem.

7. Um, slight correction
Veterans' Day (also called Armistice Day) is for VETERANS. They're the ones who survived the war and lived to tell the tale. Originally conceived to commemorate the Armistice of the first "Great War" (World War I) which occurred at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (of 1918). It has since been extended to honor all those who served.

Memorial Day honors war dead. I don't know what date that is in Canada; in the U.S. it is the last Monday in May and/or May 31.

This is in no way intended to negate your sentiment. I agree that it should be a federal holiday...and that Queen Victoria nonsense...well, that's just bizarre. Queen Victoria did more to mess up more people in the world than anyone else in the 19th century. Imperial bullshit of the finest ray serene!

Peace to you.

14. No offense to my Canadian neighbors intended, honest!
I would never presume to tell the British Empire what do do. I'm not Canadian, so I have no right to say anything.

Of course, we in the U.S. solved our problem with the British Empire a couple of centuries ago...

Now we have our OWN set of imperial woes.
