Poll question: Americans denial is an addiction, how will recovery begin?
The 50% or so of Americans who still support the administration are like addicts whose drug of choice is denial and ignorance. Those who actually benefit from the destruction of America are such a small group that if every one of them voted it still wouldn’t make a difference.

If it is true that many addicts don’t seek treatment and begin recovery until they hit rock bottom just what will the bottom be that causes the awakening?

Do you think there is hope?

1. They won't wake up
because everything they believe now about our government is directly tied to their religious beliefs. By this, if they were to realize the fallacy of our administration they would be forced to realize the fallacy of their entire belief system. Since it is impossible for them to deny their faith, we must conclude that they will never ever awaken. And we must pray that over 50% of america stays away from fundamentalism and votes in alliance to combat it.

12. Some will never wake up
And I guess that's to be expected. Some will go to their graves ranting about the evil Clenis, totally oblivious to reality.

15. I know how that is.
I have a friend who supports Bush just because he's a fundamentalist Christian and thus has automatic intergrity. (Sorry if I already mentioned this.) Maybe it's time for a spiritual evolution.

2. Nothing that happens that can be spun by the media will cause awakening
If, at the next press conference, Bush pulled off his face to reveal that he's an alien from another galaxy -- the same one that gave us Pol Pot, Arnold S. and Adolph Hitler -- and he's here to impose fascism, CNN and Fox would spin it positively and Americans would be copacetic.

3. Like all addicts....
.... the country has to hit rock bottom before progress can be made.

It won't take long, perhaps another 2-5 years, but the economy as currently managed in the US is unsustainable. When the inevitable pain comes, then everyone will wake up and ask themselves "self, how did I get here?".

Of course, there will still be some who will try to blame Clinton, but I don't think that will be a popular idea. People are already distrustful of corporate management, regulatory agencies, the Wall Street crowd. It's not going to take much to make America turn on all this corruption in a big way.

Ok, just my opinion.

4. I think,"We the People" need to get out there and...
talk. Talk to other people, stick your DU bumpersticker on your car-finish be damned. Get together in groups, get together in pairs. Fight the media, fight the administration. There is great strength in numbers. Let those who blindly follow, SEE that maybe they AREN'T in the majority...that it's still okay in this country to question one's government. Even if BushCo would have them believe differently.

6. They will not wake up, and I know why
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 10:31 AM by sybylla
They don't want to. Let me explain.

My SO comes from a family of 8 children. His mother is a compulsive liar and is queen of denial. As children, they never realized that this isn't how mothers act towards their children and found ways to be happy and feel loved in spite of it. After they got older and realized that what she was doing wasn't right or normal, most of the kids developed a kind of co-dependent relationship with her where they let her just go on in her own world, no matter how much it hurt them, because "that's just mom, you're not going to change her." As these kids grew up and married, many of the in-laws saw the problems and the hurt mama was causing and worked with their spouses to limit the damage. Mama, wanting to continue to be the center of the universe, didn't like that so she stepped up the assault. Now, most of the kids have seen the light and don't really have much to do with mama. But there are at least two, who continue to stay deeply involved with mama inspite of all the nastiness she directs at them. She claps her hands and they are at her side in an instant. She call them bad children and they bring her presents to make her happy. These adult children rationalize her behavior and will never wake up because they are still waiting for that great day when mama will start acting like a mama and do all those thing mamas are supposed to do so their world can be right again.

Many of these people who are in denial about chimpy, need to believe that their president never has nor never will lie to them. When they discover that he has and will, many of them will rationalize his behavior or deny it themselves while they wait for their beloved pres to do the right thing so their world can be right again.

Didn't mean to burst any bubbles. I just think realistically that there will always be a contingent who will never wake up because living in fantasy land is much easier and much less scary. These are your addicted.

But some of your suggestions will work on those who bought into the bushit but live in the real world with the rest of us. For most of them, we don't need to hit rock bottom first.

Cheer up, many of them are turning already. Let's just keep holding the misadministration's feet to the fire like we have been and I think we will see a great deal of success.

14. That's right.
Facing the reality that there is a criminal in the WH is more than some people could handle. It's so much easire to go along with the program, than to question chimpy.

9. They will wake up when it is too late
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 11:21 AM by GreenArrow
and there will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

"Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?.."

And right on down the line...

11. It can only be money or death. An economic collapse or a great toll of
dead soldiers and/or civilians -- that is the only kind of thing that will get through the ignorance of Americans. And even then, they might well wind up blaming the wrong things altogether.

13. The only thing most Americans seem to care about are $$$ in
their wallet OR their own children getting killed by Bush. They certainly don't care about anyone else's children being killed, and many can even rationalize their own children's pointless death in this phony war, so I would say $$$ is the bottom line for Americans.

I would say it's a safe bet that the economy is destroyed so the realization will come for most (except for the Clenis'group), but it will probably be to late for a save.
