Doing Dean A World Of Good

It is amazing that most of the Democratic Party's establishment, which has fallen back into a stop-Howard Dean formation, does not grasp the lesson I learned lo those many years ago. The more Dean's opponents attack him, the more he is adored by his supporters and the more it enhances his anti-Washington credentials. Every time they give him the kiss of death, it amounts to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He revives and comes out fighting.

This happened just recently when Dean's opponents cuffed him around for saying he wanted to broaden the appeal of his campaign to encompass "guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks." It was not the most felicitous of political statements, and Dean, after insisting he would not apologize, did so. That supposed debacle was quickly followed by two critical union endorsements, the raising of another $5 million and Dean's decision, applauded by his followers, to reject federal matching funds and finance his own campaign. Another "bad" week like this and he'll be choosing his running mate.

on edit: I've seen this same sentiment here on DU in the past week or so. Wonder if he reads DU?

That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger...

Keep up the Bashing, it's working. For Dean!

2. Cohen: Israeli whore?
snip from article:

"Dean opposed the war from the start. I did not agree then and I do not agree now, but his message is clear and has remained so. On the one issue that really matters to his people, Howard Dean has never had an "on the other hand.""

What in the world is there to support about the Iraqi war? Perhaps, just perhaps, Israel has one source of terrorist eleminated, but at the price to another sovereign nation(the US). Aside from Israeli interests, how can a sane adult think this war is good for anyone?
The beltway whores belong to a parallel universe and only occasionaly come over to this one.

4. It really is something
After the "flag-flap", soon after, was our last meet-up. I couldn't believe the turn-out in our Republican stronghold. At least half the folks were first-time attendees.

I'm in the middle of a big membership drive for my local Dem board. I met a few of the folks that replied to that and even signed up a couple of Repubs.

Emotions are running very high in America and the Dean campaign seems to channel that pretty well.

6. Same thing at my Meet-up, "Dean's reaching out to the South..."
We had over 30 first-timers, and one guy said he was glad to finally see a Democrat reaching out to Southern voters!

As John Kerry would say, "Dean, Dean, Dean, Dean, Dean,..."

5. I think the dems that challenged Dean know all this
they know how many supporters Dean has, and how loyal they are.

But I think they really did see his comments as violating one of the democratic party's core values, and insulting to an important part of their base.

So in a way, they're doing what a lot of people are always demanding they do, which is showing backbone.

The way it ended up was very good, with Jesse Jackson Jr. advising Dean to apologize, and Dean correctly doing so. The alternative would have been for the dems to cower in the face of Dean's support and leave Al Sharpton hanging. I'm very glad they didn't do that.
