My Dean bumper sticker caused a woman to yell at me today
I hope you all don't mind me telling you this story because it made me feel very hopeful...

I was stopped at a stop light in Birmingham, AL today, when I hear screaming from behind me. Clearly, the screaming was directed toward me, so I look in the mirror, and there is a woman leaning out of her window yelling in my direction.

My first thought was, "Uh-oh...it begins." So I roll down my window, stick my head out and say in a nice, sweet voice, "Yes? May I help you."

She said, "Where did you get your Dean sticker?"

To which I replied, "Would you like one?"

You'd thought it was Christmas. She jumped out of her car whooping, and literally skipped to my car. I gave her two stickers, and I thought she was going to kiss me.

She put the sticker on right there while the light was still red.

This gave me such hope - not necessarily about Dean, but about Democrats chances in 2004. Birmingham is not a hotbed of anti-Bush fervor, nor is it a primary powerhouse. We usually just wait to see who wins in all of the other state primaries, and then go through the motions in our June primary. We really don't matter in the grand scheme of things. So to see someone so excited to put a non-Bush sticker on her car this far ahead of our primary just made me smile. If this happened in Birmingham, imagine the intense feelings around the nation.

Thanks for letting me share that.

Any similar experiences lately?

4. Yes, with Dean
I was in a conference in Calgary (AB, Canada) and sat with a few people from my state and another lady from the U.S. The latter lady said something about Dean and asked if we wanted stickers -- well, we all did! And we're from a red state too.

I'll put it on my car the second he gets the nod, if he does.

7. What do ya know?!
That IS encouraging :) And in Birmingham, AL?! When you said you got yelled at, I thought it might be some really unrepeatable words, but what a pleasant surprise. It kind of gives me hope; I've been reluctant to put one on my car just yet (I have one outside my office door) for fear the right-wing nuts that dominate my county would trash my car. But, hey, if you can do it in AL, maybe I can do it here in CA!

10. My wife has one on her car too
She says she gets positive comments all of the time at gas stations.

We've had them on for months now and not a single negative comment.

Go figure.

8. Wahoo!
That's good news! As you said, mostly because it's anti-Bush. I'm wondering if Michael Moore isn't right that all incumbents are going to be in trouble in the next election. There are a few I'd like to keep, but the others...

9. I've been wearing my Dean button religiously since May and a week
ago 2 women at the local Stop & Shop noticed it and I gave them buttons and bumpersticker.

I live in the "Rip vanWinkle" side of Connecticut, eastern CT. But at least they are waking up in time for the March 2 primary.

12. That is the BEST story!
It gives me so much hope.

Did you know that the Dean meet-up added a second group this month in Birmingham? I don't know how the crowd was for the new group (it was on my mom's birthday, so I couldn't go). I'm so excited, 'cause the new group is out in the burbs where I live! I think it's a very big deal that there is enough interest in Dean to have a meet-up out here in Repugland!

13. We haven't been able to attend one yet
Perhaps I'll see you at the next one. We always have baby-sitting issues (do you know any good sitters in the Homewood area?).

14. I love when that happens
Mari and I suffer a lot of road rage for the stickers we have on the Jeep (not to mention the license plate), but every now and again, like today, just when we thought the driver behind us was honking in anger, we were flashed the peace sign ... a rare event in Michigan.

Vote Quimby!

15. A Nice young man asked where I got my "Dean
pin" today at our Co-op~! I told him at the meetup I went to in October. It left the door open for me to ask him if he heard Al Gore's speech on Sunday at the Constitution Hall in Wash D.C. sponsored by Moveon.org? He hadn't but I was able to tell a few People today about how Grreat Prez Gore was on his historic speech.

It's so funny because you never know who is standing around at the Co-op when we're talking politics and sure enough there was a lady behind him who said to me .."I don't agree with your politics but you're a nice person anyway"...I told her .."I know you don't agree because I remember your husband talking about it in 2000. And she started on about how nice it was that we were "able to talk about our difference without getting shot"...I said yeah and I want to keep it that way. She said if only people would understand..and I said yeah that we have the right to dissent and I dissent Strongly! The lady behind her let out a haha!

Glad you had a terrific experience in your car! :kick:
