11. he did more than help with legislation
he wrote and sponsored the legislation and found the funding. In a very real sense he did not "invent" the internet, but he did create it or bring it into being.

8. NO
but he contributed to creating it.

Excerpt from Al Franken's book "Lies and the Lying Liars that tell them" (Pg. 40-41)

The Internet, as you may know, because a big hit in the nineties and briefly enjoyed a great deal of media coverage. With this in mind, Gore told Wolf Blitzer in a 1999 interview, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
What do you suppose he meant? That, late at night in his office in the Russel Building, after the other senators had gone home, he had written the PASCAL code that allowed packet switching? Probably not. No. What he seemed to be doing is what members of Congress do: He was taking credit for a program he championed and funded. In this case, one that revolutionized the information in frastructure of the entire world.

What an asshole.

The phrase "invented the Internet" first appeard in a Republican Party press release and would be repeated by the "liberal" press thousands of times during the campaign. What should have been an enormous credit to the man's vision became a symbol of his insidious, compulsive dishonesty. Ironically, Gore was sometimes criticiezed via the Internet itself!

9. Ehat Gore said was that he was one of the few politicians to
recognize the potential of the Arpanet, the precursor to the internet, and to further promote the evolution of it into what it has become. Not once ever did he make the claim that he invented the interenet. Another misrepresented fact seized upon by the BUsh spin doctors and repeated ad nauseum until nobody dared check its veracity....

15. sometime in the distant future...
when most details about present day have been lost to time, the only things anyone will "know" about Al Gore is that he was robbed of the presidency in 2000, and that he invented the internet. This will be a heroic memory, because everyone in the future will understand that it was the internet was the mighty tool that allowed the world to defeat fascism.

What began as a horrid lie about what he did or did not claim will eventually be reduced to innacurate history, just like Washington's Cherry Tree.

And people will celebrate Al and the internet. Which I think is poetic justice.

14. If Marc Addreesen says so....
The inventor of the Mosaic Browser, Marc Andreesen, credits Gore with making his work possible. He received a federal grant through Gore's High Performance Computing Act. The University of Pennsylvania's Dave Ferber says that without Gore the Internet "would not be where it is today."

Mosaic, as you all know was the precurser of the Netscape browser. The availability of a free, user friendly browser is what made the Internet something for everyone (not just the DARPA scientists) to use.
