11. I can't really decide either |
|
Edwards is my top pick but I'm split for second between Kerry and Gephardt. Kerry impresses me as very presidential but Gephardt's pro-labor/blue-collar background is very simpatico with me.
Just as an aside, watching Gore's speech the other day made me wish again that he was in the race and we could have Southern populism, military/foreign policy experience and an anti-Iraq war stance all in one candidate, instead of spread out across a field of nine.

2. At least Lieberman has convictions. Gephardt capitulates to easy. |
|
If he were president and there was a Republican congress the Republicans would rule the country.

When a questioner said Kerry implied that Gephardt had compromised too easily with the White House, Gephardt replied that the president had made it clear he would not accept a "two-step" process that required him to come back to Congress for authorization of force. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0221-03.htm

Gephardt's vote was not contingent on what the President would accept, was it? And certain the Rose Garden kiss-up was optional, right?
Actually, a lot of Washington Democrats (not just Kerry) had problems with Gephardt's conduct, because they thought it undercut their efforts to negotiate on more circumspect language in the Senate.
However, Gephardt got a little bit back, in my mind, by admitting he made a mistake. (That's the short version of it.) So I put him tied for (my) third place with virtually the entire pack as a result.

His performance at the debates has convinced me he's not presidential material.

3. I like his stands on NAFTA/WTO |
|
(similar to DKucinich's) but otherwise, he gets lost in the pack.

The former "Rust Belt" of the United States has been moved to Northern Mexico, Central China, and East India. Dick Gephardt fought his arse off to prevent that and as someone who's brother works in an automative plant I appreciate that. he's been there for the workers of this country time and time again.
Plus, he is no Republican-lite. That is just crazy. The guy fought Newt tooth and nail.

of people probably don't know that about Gephardt. But that could be a big factor. Here in NC traditional republicans are disgusted with Bush becuase furniture and textile manufacturing jobs are going overseas in droves. If Geppy can ride that sentiment, he may have a chance.

12. If Congressman Gephardt and House Minority Leader Gephardt were the same |
|
...as Candidate Gephardt, I could easily vote for him. Unfortunately this is not the case. While Candidate Gephardt correctly characterizes the Bush Fraudministration as a miserable failure he couldn't have gotten away with half of his failures without the willing complicity of so called Congressional "leadership" from Gephardt along with Daschle, Biden, and the Jurassic Park refugees like Zell Miller, Evan Bayh, etc.

14. he will be the most effective candidate to deal with congress |
|
he knows the players, the culture and where the bodies are.
any democratic president in 2005 will most probably be dealing with a rabidly partisan republican congress. gephardts's experience in the congress will help him, and this experience will serve him better than the experience dean or clark has in their background.
in the final analysis, a moderate democratic president who is able to get things done with congress will be better than one more liberal who can't.

1. Dean 2. Braun, because her campaign is total class, and I forgive her for her trip to Nigeria, and she's explained it well. 3. Gephardt-Clark-Edwards-Kerry-Lieberman-Kucinich 4. Sharpton, who's great entertainment but my last choice for President. Still better than Bush, though.
