ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who has made headlines by going after wrongdoing on Wall Street, said Wednesday he would like to be governor but is not ready to announce his candidacy just yet.

The Democrat had previously said he was thinking about running in 2006. But in an interview with The Associated Press, he went a step further.

``Oh sure,'' he answered matter-of-factly when asked if would like to be governor. ``I've never denied that I'd like to be governor.''

``I think it's a job that is challenging, that is important, where some of the most important decisions about New York state's future are made,'' he added. ``We are at a pivotal point in terms of our economy, in terms of how we educate our children, in terms of how we control our budget. It is a fascinating and important position which could permit one to do wonderful things.''

9. Anyone is better than pataki but
I like Spitzer except for the fact that he doesn't know a bogus war when he sees one.

16. Where and when did he express his opinion on the war?
And why did he? A super smart politician wouldn't do that if he didn't have to, and Spitzer really didn't have to.

8. it's still good news
after all governors don't make decisions about war & Spitzer has been bringing some good cases to court.

6. Since most people don't go from State AG to pres..it's a good move
but I would much rather see Spitzer as US AG..for OUR sake.

15. I would like that too.
Unless his support for the war in Iraq indicates he'd be soft on the Patriot Act...

11. As a New Yorker
that works for the New York State Government, I can honestly say that Eliot Spitzer is one of the most up front and honest people in politics. That and he has big brass ones! If he ran for Governor, Pataki should start packing at the beginning of the campaign.
