Camille Paglia fans, please explain: |
|
Why is she on the Rush Limbaugh show praising Rush and cuddling up to Matt Drudge, the special host? I thought she was a "liberal" ?

She never really was a liberal - more of a libertarian type.

I've always found her to be a bit suspicious. I generally cringe when I see her as an "expert" on any type of show that has to do with sexuality or gender relations.

And if that's not an insult, I don't know what is.
Camille is all about Camille and being SO very shocking! Which makes her so very tedious.

A week when I've seen "men's rights" rear its hideous head around here several times too often ... and to find an I-hate-Camille-Paglia thread, with almost unanimity. And you summed her up just grand.
I figure her success is one of the many things in the world ... like CSI Miami ... that is attributable in significant part to the plain fact that half the world has an IQ under 100. Offer 'em somebody with an IQ of 102 and -- lord knows why, some genetic fluke? dysfunctional childhood? -- a truly enormous ego ... a little rouge and maybe some silicon ... and voilà, a Camille Paglia.
All I can think of when I see or read her (which has been almost never, than heaven), is how embarrassed I would be to be her.

She is the reciprocal to Andrew Sullivan.
Her neo-libertarianism is tres transparent.
She should be a "Fox Consultant". She'd fit right in with the whole cage of misfits that Roger Ailes parades in front of the nation as either counter-culture, left or progressive.
I don't know which is rawer, her labia or her thesaurus.
Andrew and Paglia. Yeah, that's it.

I like her writing on a lot of cultural issues and in some ways I do think she is simply brutally honest. But most of the time she's just contrarian and likes doing things and saying things solely for the purpose of p*ssing people off.
She's also said she plans on voting for Dean in the democratic primary.

When did she say that?
I also find it VERY hard to believe she's a registered Dem.
I'd believe it if she were a libertarian though...which brings us back 'round to Dean.

The shrieking harridan soiled their front page recently talking about how bad democrats are and how brilliant Rush Limbaugh is. Now their front page has an article asking for my money saying they are the only ones who criticize Bush.
Yeah, that's it.

She's always been close to Matt Drudge and his irresistable, 3-billion clicks a year! Her speeches on C-Span always get looped over and over again because viewers enjoy her flamboyant pugnacity. She's an entertainer that builds her base by poking at the truims of high-orthodox Lefties. Many progressives like myself find her vamp-act amusing even if we don't always agree with her.
Some folks never could handle uppity women.

She in fact is an initiate of Harold Bloom and his school of the Western Canon. She's basically a literary/social critic with a fascination for the archetypal and symbolic as it occurs throughout Western culture/civilization.
Probably she sees Rush for what he is: a type of later day P.T. Barnum -- a showman who's in business entertaining the ignant masses. It's all good fun to her I'm sure, which in a way, is a pretty healthy way to not take politics so seriously that we lose our historical/aesthetic/cultural perspective on what happens.
Do a search on Harold Bloom and Camille, you might find yourself wandering into some fascinating and substantive intellectual territory.

17. She had some amusing ideas on cultural issues.... |
|
But she's found better money in being the token tame Lesbian/feminist. I read her column in Salon until the repetition got to me. There's a serious lack of new ideas but her shtick is commercially successful.

21. Tame Lesbian/feminist? |
|
Not at all.
She simply doesn't subscribe to the dogmas of the politically correct Paris School of feminism which, since its ascendency in the late 80's and early 90's, has imposed an agruably debilitating agenda on the study of the "Humanities" in the Western Academy.
She's just one of the women who are lesbian/feminists who also happens to think some dead white guys like Homer, Ovid, Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, T.S. Eliot et al actually were brilliant human beings despite their "partiarchal handicaps", and still have something relevent to say about the human condition.
I like her because her intellect is bigger than her sexual orientation.

she's merely facile (she does not have a penetrating intelligence) And if she is so disgusted by academic elitism, why doesn't she resign her cushy university position. She falls victim to the comforting self-delusion of "I'm not pretty, so I must be smart" Hell, I'll go with Dom Arrera if I'm looking for laughs from an ugly Italian
