Poll question: Have you ever Tried pot? |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 04:35 PM by CMT
Well the presidential candidates were asked, so I thought I would ask fellow DUers if you have ever smoked a joint (or two).
As I recall it Dean, Kerry, and Edwards answered yes. Mosley-Braun declined to answer. Sharpton, Kucinich answered NO.
I forget which way Clark, Gep, and Lieberman answered.

1. Not only tried it - I convicted it. |
|
It is not any thing to fear. It is not addictive and it is part of the answer to alcoholism. The stuff needs to be legalized in the worst way and if it were the free land some people think it is instead of plutocratic/Nazi America it would be.

Still partake at least once a week. I hgihly reccommend to anyone that is curious. I like it WAY better than alcohol.
I guess I'll never hold public office. Unless I had an (R) after my name, in which case it wouldn't matter. But I would never let and (R) appear after my name, so back to no public offices for me.

|
He had a special bottle cap with a bowl connected to it and an opening to draw smoke through, into the bottle. The bottle had a small hole near the bottom. Fill with water while covering the hole, put on cap. Hold lighter to bowl and uncover hole near bottom. Water drains out, smoke comes in. Remove cap. Inhale smoke.

Well, I'm just rather fond of toilet paper cardboard rolls, with a hole cut out and some old tinfoil from last summer's fast food (I don't *buy* that non-degradable foil stuff, I'm a child of the 60s who tries to tread lightly; do you people actually call it aluminum foil?) -- taped on so it makes a nice deep little bowl, with some holes punched in it using whatever old political campaign button is hanging on the lampshade ... hand over the end, all set.
I mean, if memory serves and all that.

Trying it may be illegal but occaisional use is not unhealthy. As long as you are in a safe environemnt, nothing bad will happen to you if you smoke pot one time. In some states, its illegality is equivalent to a traffic ticket. I think that anyone who would not vote for a candidate because they smoked pot is very misinformed.

Believe it or effin not, we got a Christmas letter one year, from the husband of one of my husbands classmates, bragging about how they took a Carribian vacation and wrote it off on their taxes.............. and then proceeded to brag about all the other loopholes their advisor had found them.
We were living in a mobile home at the time and scratching to get by while we were both continuing our educations.
I don't toke, but I'll take a pot smoker over a Repub any day too.

Yes, some of them are addicts and they are less pleasant to be around when they haven't had any pot for a few days. When I say they are addicts, I mean that they are heavy smokers and go through a relatively mild withdrawal which is similiar to the emotional aspects of some (not the most severe cases) women's PMS. It is also relatively inexpensive for all but the heaviest users and some of my friends that I'd call heavy users spend more on cigarettes than they do on pot. Should we not trust cigarette addicts either? Do you trust people that go to bars and get drunk? That can be an expensive addiction as well.

Get bent! Pot is NOT addictive and people are NOT compelled to smoke it when they don't have any so they're NOT compelled to steal to get it.
The tripe you're spewing is unbeleivably ignorant. And don't even tell me that pot IS addictive because you'd be full of it. I worked in drug addiction research for quite a few years and it is NOT addictive.

Have you ever read the studies done on marijuana use? It is NOT addictive. Go argue w/ the scientists. You keep making making yourself look like a bigger and bigger fool with every post.
Why are there many many many more recreational pot smokers who only smoke occasionally? If it was addictive, that wouldn't be the case.
Do cigarette smokers steal for cigarettes? Cigarettes ARE addictive you know. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances there is.
You are amazingly ignorant.

99. Want to know about DEA tests? |
|
The DEA shoves twenty pounds of marijuana ruffage down a dogs throat, killing it, and then when the dog dies they say marijuana is dangerous. That's how the DEA does it.
Real scientific studies, double blind studies, good studies have shown over and over again that marijuana isn't addictive or dangerous or have any of the harmful effects the DEA says it does.
The DEA is a pack of liars and everybody knows it.
You can look up the studies the FDA did on THC when they approved it for human consumption years ago.

The average cigarette smoker smokes 1 pack (20 cigs) a day. The average pot smoker does NOT smoke 20 joints a day! It would be hard to even physically do that. You cannot overdose on pot, your body won't allow it. This has also been proven medically by the way. You'd pass out or vomit before you could smoke that much in one day. In my experience, the average pot smoker smokes anywhere from 1-3 joints a week. A heavy user might smoke as much as 1 or 2 joints a day. And believe me, I've known some mighty heavy pot smokers in my day and it's cheaper than a habit of cigarettes, heavy drinking and by FAR cheaper than other drugs.

you're getting your dosages mixed up man.
Ciggs cost $5 in most places. The same as a joint. Smoking a joint gets you high for 45 mins-1 hour. Ciggarettes may not be as expensive, but they certainly are NOT cheap.
We're not missing the point...YOU HAVE NO POINT. Just an overgeneralization based on a bad experience and a LOT of paranoia. Repeating the lie will not make it true

142. A joint gets me high for the rest of the day |
|
If I smoke after work. In fact, that much gets me too high and is uncomfortable for the first hour with very little remembered during that hour. An hour high for me can be achieved in 2-3 hits and I take relatively small hits. I usually share a joint with 3-4 friends. I agree with you, youngred, since many people use cigarettes heavily, it can be a more expensive habit than smoking a little pot every day.

97. No, pot is not chemically addictive |
|
It may be psychologically addictive, but than again anything can be. Sex and overeating come to mind.
But things like alcohol and tobacco ARE chemically addictive. Would you paint all cigarette smokers with the "thief!" brush? How do working class people afford to smoke anyway... oh, they must steal to support the habit! /sarcasm
Look, I've struggled with addiction many years ago with painkillers. Unfortunately, I do smoke cigarettes and I can guarantee you that there is a major difference between those addictions and the what could best be called "desire" to smoke weed. Not to mention this has been medically proven.
Just because you've had some run-ins with some people who would stoop to such levels doesn't mean for one second that you can make such broad generalizations. It smacks of "all blacks are criminals" and other tired and uninformed generalizations.

Your use of the word "rasta" as a euphemism for cannabis is singular. In my many years of associating with smokers and working with Jamaicans in reggae bands, I've never heard the word used that way.
"Rasta" is shorthand for "Rastafarian," a follower of the Itations of Rastafari. I have neither the time nor the inclination to give you a dissertation on this religious sect, you can read up on it yourself with a bit of googling. But your confusion of "ganja" with "Rasta" makes your posts suspect to begin with.
What makes them even moreso is your implication that the desire by anyone to purchase marijuana makes them more likely to steal than someone desirous of any other posession. Drugs which are physically addictive often drive addicts to criminal behavior to fund their addiction. Marijuana is not addictive in the way of heroin or methamphetimines (abusers of these drugs often commit crimes to facilitate their habit). I've known guys in my life who stole stuff out of parked cars to get beer money. This is anecdotal, and does nothing to establish the proposition that beer drinkers are chronic theives because of their beer addiction.
You're not going to get far on DU with arguments like these. A bit more research, fact-finding, erudition and tact are required unless you wish to make yourself unwelcome.

As a matter of fact, that usage of the word is disrespectful. It's like calling a shot of Irish whiskey a "Catholic" or calling a falafel sandwich a "Muslim."

"When I was in college my roomate was a pot smoker and he stole quite a few of my items includding my school books."
I mean, yeah, I used to smoke pot and steal course books -- but from the bookstore, not from my roommate. She was taking very boring courses.
Ah, the 60s. Couldn't remember, this morning, whether I ever participated in a US flag-burning at a Vietnam demo, but I did remember setting my hair on fire lighting a joint in the main hall at a Liberal Party of Canada convention.
Got to drink fine liqueur with the lesser-known rogue Marcel, but never got to do a doobie with Pierre. Did do the deed with a close relation of Colin Thatcher, the Saskatchewan politician still serving his life sentence for having his wife murdered.
Aha, six degrees of separation.
I used to live with a Texan, call him Butch. He'd lived in Austin with a woman named ... I forget. She used to be married to Jay had been quite the life of the party -- spent some of his nights with Koo Stark and Jerry Hall, apparently. And in what, 5? short steps, that hooks me up with Andrew and Mick ... and yeah, a whole bunch of other really old people that hardly anyone here has ever heard of ...
C'mon. You just can't ask about smoking pot and not expect to hear the stories.

Yup, was a staple in my house for years. Started smoking it when I was 14 and quit when I was 35. Haven't smoked it for about 13 years though. I DO miss it. :( LOVED it! The only thing I don't miss about it is the "munchies"....man, that was unbelieveable.

I work for a company that does random drug testing and that considers smoking grounds for dismissal. Since we have employees directly responsible for lives based on immediate decision making and accurate performance of moderately complex tasks I guess it makes some sense, although my job doesn't require either of those things. It's a good job, so in balance it's worth giving up smoking dope to keep it.
OTOH, I smoked for years and enjoyed it, even grew some truly remarkable weed for personal and local consumption for several years. When I'm retired I am pretty certain I'll have a little patch someplace - I've got seeds stashed waiting for the day.
A couple of years ago my father was being treated for various problems. The side effects of the treatment were ameliorated by smoking dope (or eating brownies). It was pretty funny when I went to the HR department here and told them I was travelling to Portland, OR to score some dope for my father :-)

143. "Marijuana Linked to Sitting Around and Getting High" |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 06:14 PM by scarletwoman
The National Institute of Health released the results of a controversial new study today, one that links the drug marijuana to sitting around and getting high. The study, a comprehensive five-year survey of drug use among Americans, also suggests a possible connection between marijuana and getting baked off your ass.
"We have found that where there's marijuana," explained Institute spokesperson Roger Krell, "there's also a good chance of finding stoners on a couch passing around a bong." Krell added that in such situations, "There is also a strong likelihood of finding incense, a TV, and some chips, usually Ruffles."
Krell would neither confirm nor deny the alleged link between marijuana and Pink Floyd's The Wall. He would confirm, however, that the album rules. "There is some seriously fucked-up shit on that album," he said. "Especially side two. Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb..."
Marijuana, or "pot," as it is called on the street, is a harmless drug that helps you relax and feel mellow. Its only known side-effects are occasional uncontrollable laughter and mild hunger, or "the munchies."http://www.theonion.com/onion3001w/marijuana.htmlsw :smoke:

I could go on and on. Basically, I've been around people who are on it, and I have heard stories from people being on it, and I find that basically all that weed does is make you act dumb. I don't need that. I have no desire to act dumb, nor to be around people acting dumb.
And, although this has very little to do with pot, some of my very good friends from my past stabbed me in the back, and they were big into pot and the liking, and I basically decided I wanted to be nothign like them. And that just happeened to go along with it.
Those are my main reasons for not smoking pot.
And yes, I consider myself high on life. :smoke:

165. Like I said trying pot is no big deal |
|
Possession of small amounts is not much of a crime in most states. Many freeps got drunk for the first time while underage. How is that considered alright while trying pot is not. Drinking heavily while young and inexperienced could actually lead to a medical emergency or even death. Many people look at people weird who have never been drunk but people demonize those who have been stoned. Without trying meaning to sound like a drug pusher, I think getting high is a good experience and I think that all people should experience it just to see what it is like. Getting high won't turn you into anything that you are not already, but getting drunk could. There's nothing to be afraid about in trying it provided that you can get it easily. If a friend offers you some, try it and then make up your mind (I am recommending this for adults, not children).

at least our presumptive nominee had the courage to own up to a joint or two—to be distinguished from the sitting president, who doesn't want you to know that he was strung out on coke for YEARS because that might make his puritanical agenda seem a little, you know, hypocritical.
