Thu, Nov 13, 2003

NASIRIYAH, Iraq - U.S. troops destroyed an empty dye factory in Baghdad and chased attackers who were seen firing mortars, while the death toll from the suicide bombing at an Italian paramilitary base rose to 31. It was the deadliest attack against a U.S. ally since the occupation began.

Lamb said details of the attack remained unclear because "all the people who were eyewitnesses, who were close to the event, are now dead," but he said, "this has all the hallmarks of a determined suicide attack."

Tue Nov 4, 7:00 AM ET

KIRKUK, Iraq (AFP) - An Iraqi judge was killed in US crossfire Monday night in the northern city of Kirkuk, his cousin, who was injured in the incident.

"I was driving with my cousin sitting next to me. It was 11:00 pm (2000 GMT). I did notice that US soldiers were between the houses. They shot at the car and my cousin was killed and I was injured," said Attallah Khalaf, 35.

Judge Hussein Ahmed Shehab, 38, was killed by two bullets in the head and Khalaf was injured in the stomach and shoulders, according to Nawzat Mahmud, head surgeon at Kirkuk's general hospital.

Sat Nov 8, 1:07 PM ET

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AFP) - Two US soldiers died in Iraq when a bomb ripped their heavily armored Bradley personnel carrier, as insurgents escalated their attacks on the Americans.

As the latest deaths were announced, visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said the US administration was "sobered" by attacks against coalition troops in flashpoint areas of Iraq, a country he called "a war zone".

The powerful bomb blast just outside the powderkeg town of Fallujah came only a day after a Blackhawk military helicopter crashed, as alarm grew that anti-US combatants were developing weaponry that could take down the US tanks and choppers.

The first incident was on October 29 when an M1 Abrams tank was hit by a bomb, killing two crew members near the northeastern town of Balad.

Wed 12 Nov 2003

AT LEAST four Iraqis were killed yesterday when a roadside bomb ripped through a bus in the southern city of Basra, in the latest deadly attack by anti-coalition forces.

U.S. troops defending hospital reportedly kill 6

Nov. 12, 2003. 07:20 PM

BAGHDAD (AP) - U.S. paratroopers killed six attackers and wounded four others in a shootout outside the hospital run by the Jordanian government near the city of Fallujah, the U.S. army's 82nd Airborne Division said today.

A division statement said troops came under automatic weapons fire Tuesday from a vehicle stopped near the hospital. As the soldiers returned fire, the attackers fled toward a second car but were stopped by the paratroopers, the statement said.

A third vehicle approached at high speed and did not slow when the paratroopers fired warning shots, the statement said. The soldiers fired on the vehicle, killing two people.

"Hostile forces then fired from a fourth vehicle at the U.S. troops, at which time the soldiers also engaged that automobile," the statement said, adding that the four who were wounded were evacuated for medical treatment.

The statement said four other people were killed, but gave no details.
