I'm sitting here, barely able to type.
I'm a sohphmore at UConn, but I wouldn't have been able to say that if it wasn't for Dr. Donald Slater. He was my High School interim-now official- principal.
He is an incredible man. He had the ability to unify everyone. Not a single human being in our school hated him.
And now he's being shipped off to Iraq. I remember when he had to help the cleanup at the WTC. He had to pick up body parts scattered around the scene. He comes from a military family, and is a military man, but he just couldn't talk about it without wanting to get off the subject.
This is why we love him:
"Although he is a strong supporter of the military, Slater never imposed his opinions at Hall, a school with a strong tradition of allowing staff and students to voice their opinions.
A peace club started at the school shortly before the war in Iraq began. Slater supported the students' activism, even when he didn't share their views.
"People ask me if war protestors make me angry, and no, they don't," Slater said. "That is what makes this country so great. Your ability to have opinions.""
Dammit, we need to end this f*cking war. This is a good man. This man has a family.
This man shouldn't be risking his life. His is too important.
