You know who I mean. . .the paramilitary cranks who were convinced they had to protect their liberties from the government and that black helicopters were gonna swoop down and git 'em?

I mean, considering the Patriot Act and all, you'd think there'd have been a re-surgence. Or are they just waiting to come on out and say "told ya so"?

Best place to start IMO is David Neiwert. Neiwert published one of the most important books on the so-called Patriot movement and his blog, Orcinus, is primarily focused on monitoring incipient American fascism in all its forms. What makes his stuff especially valuable is that he isn't just slinging the term "fascism" around as a facile ad hominem brickbat. He has done an extraordinarily useful survey of the various attempts at a rigorous definition of the phenomenon, and is working from a sharply focused and rationally justified usage of the term.
