We used 1,000 lb bombs instead of tanks

snip>
Earlier this week, in an area south of Baghdad where 82nd Airborne units also are operating, two 1,000-pound bombs were dropped on a house in the town of Iskindriyah used by six insurgents as a hideout.

After taking the six into custody, soldiers removed other occupants of the house along with their personal effects, sealed off the area before the air strike took place.

"Every time we use force we do it in such a way to minimize injuries to civilians or collateral damage," he said.

Am I reading this correctly? They destoyed the home as a warning or a punishment against harboring insurgents as guests or family? They arrested the guys they were after, then destroyed the home. Hasn't this tactic been proven ineffective?

1. sounds like overkill
a couple of troops with a Bradley AFV could have taken this house rather easily with no casualties

1,000 pound bombs are not needed

2. Collective Punishment
Destroying houses used by insurgents is a form of collective punishment. The IDF have been doing similar things in the West Bank for years and it really solved all of the problems there, stopped attacks against Israeli troops and civillians and captured the hearts and minds the Palestinians.

3. Don't you see
how that will make the Iraqi people love and trust us that much more? I'm sure that, as we speak, they're out picking flowers to throw to our soldiers. Well, it's hard to actually throw flowers up into the bombing airplanes :nuke:
