RW Triangulation: Moore - Filibuster - PBA Ban
Is anyone surprised this is all hapening at the same time?

The repigs pull their filibuster in the Senate over the 4 blocked wackos, the Dems fight back and are accused of being obstructionists. At the same time, bush signs the partial birth abortion ban (surrounded by his fav holy roller racist, anti-female white guys), and the ban is immediately blocked by "activist" judges. At the same time, Holy Moore is kicked out of the Alabama judiciary by a bunch of "God-hating" judges.

What's the point? Well, the point is that if the repigs had won on any of these issues, they'd be worse off than having lost on all of them. This is all a charade to firm up their rabid right-wing evangelical base via an artificially created wedge issue. bush's numbers are in the toilet, and this all has to do with shoring up the base. To the crazy repigs, Anti-Americanism + anti-right-to-life + anti-God = evangelical votes.

The fact that the triangulation knocks the real issues (illegal war, 9/11 stalling, Enron, etc) off the screen is a bonus, especially as these stories constitute the political news of the day. Once the 11 minutes of political news has been filled, the networks go to the human interest crap like Laci, Kobe and, if they're desperate, Robert Blake.

You've got to admit, the repigs know how to use the general ignorance of the American population to their best advantage.

2. A spin through the AM radio dial and yesterday evening and ...
...the Fundy stations were not talking about Jesus or Charity or Brotherhood.
They were all talking about judges!
These guys are organized using modern marketing techniques.
Synchronicity!

4. What's funny is that none of these are victories.
IF you look at it, the Religious right isn't moving substantially forward at all. Instead, President Bush is hoodwinking them with phoney baloney things like these judges.

I don't think they'll stay hoodwinked forever. The religious right has shown a focus and a disapline that one has to admire.

5. How significant is the political fundie bloc?
I know the Republicans are pandering to them at an atrocious rate, and they certainly make enough noise, but is there any research to show just how large and influential the bloc is?

The second question has to be, "How can we take them out of the fight?" Would they be vunerable to economic issues? corruption issues? (Although with Rush coming out of the manure pile apparently smelling like a rose, one wonders) There's got to be something either positive or negative the will, if not seitch them, at least cause a critical number to simply stay home.

Alterh\nately, can we mobilize a backlaash vote of the middle? The example that is hitting close to ome right now is teh Episcopal Bishop fiasco. Ten to fifteen percent of the people are on one vociferous side or the other screaming at the tops of their lungs, The remainder of us resent like hell being dragged into choosing sides in an issue we don't see as nearly as important as other problems that are being ignored.

I dont think that they are really very large, but they vote in droves, every single election.

7. although I'd like to hope otherwise, I wouldn't be shocked if the SC
decision, LAWRENCE ET AL. v. TEXAS, wasn't to flame the Cultural War, too ... the SCOTUS has some fairly cooperative Felonious members ... at least 5 can be found in this list:

Kennedy, J., delivered the opinion of the Court, in which Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg, and Breyer, JJ., joined. O’Connor, J., filed an opinion concurring in the judgment. Scalia, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which Rehnquist, C. J., and Thomas, J., joined. Thomas, J., filed a dissenting opinion.

With the possibility of another close vote, even with Diebold in use, Rove wants to shave a %-age here and a %-age there.
