National Guard Prepares for Long Haul

DENVER - When National Guardsman John Schreiber learned he could be sent to Iraq before Christmas, his 7-year-old son told him, "Dad, you're going to die."

"I had to assure him that just because I'm going someplace doesn't mean something bad is going to happen," said Schreiber, a Colorado Springs firefighter and a staff sergeant in a National Guard firefighting company.

Schreiber, 34, was among about 85 Guard members in Colorado told to report to Fort Carson near Colorado Springs next month to prepare for 18-month deployments in Iraq. They haven't been told when they will ship out.

The orders prompted the Schreiber family to change their Thanksgiving plans. Instead of staying home, they'll travel to Phoenix to visit Schreiber's brothers, his ailing father and his mother.

1. That kid is only focusing on the negative!
Didn't he get the memo? He's not supposed to believe what he sees on the news. Well, if it's bad. It's all sunshine and flowers these days, kid! Get with the program...

Dad will be fine. And, in case he's not, no one will hear about it. It's our little secret, capice?

That poor little boy. You know he's worried sick. How many kids are being traumatized by all this insanity? Wish we could link arms and give them all a hug.

2. Amazing what a smart child and how very sad
It proves that people are intelligent...its just a lifetime of media and corporate propoganda that dulls the mind.

I hope his dad is able to come home safely!

3. National Guard -
Have I always been wrong about the National Guard? I thought their main purpose was domestic protection. Have we always sent the National Guard to war? If not, when did we start? I admit I don't know that much about them but my impression has always been "domestic."

4. The single highest unit casualty rate in Viet Nam was a Guard unit...
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 11:24 AM by Patriot_Spear
From Bardstown Kentucky. An artillery unit that had its' firebase overran; they had an 80% mortality rate. They were all from the same town. Can you imagine what that was like when the telegrams started coming in?

God help us before Bush* kills more of our guys.

12. That's terrible.
I didn't know so many were sent to other countries. God help us if we need them here.

5. No child
should have to live with the thought that their parent IS going to die. How sad for him. I loathe Bush for putting that fear in that little boys head and heart. Bastard.

9. I disagree, but only slightly
If this was even a halfway justifiable war, instead of a war built 100% on lies and disgarceful Orwellian bullshit.

If it wasn't a war designed to enrich the Bush Crime Family, Capos, Buttons, and Allies alike while destroying the American Experiment so that the ashes can be possessed by the disgusting spoiled mostlikely callous and murderous granchildren of Poppy Caeser, then I would say that such feelings were a sacrifice to be made for the greater good, and that many would sacrifice much much more.

But the Iraq Invasion is all of those things, and thus a disgrace that will echo throughout history.

As I said, I only disagree with you slightly.

6. Wait a minute- If Rummy says we're pulling out in June...
How can they send this guy to Iraq for 18 months? The 'newspeak' is getting pretty thick.

I wonder if anyone'll buy the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner the second time around.

I feel awful for that kid. I hope he's not right, but he's certainly aware of what's happening in Iraq. When will other folks get the message?

8. I was sitting next to a dad in my son's football class who is
awaiting orders. He was telling me how he was soaking up every expression...every movement...every word...from his son. It was chilling to sit next to him. All I wanted to do was put my arms around this man. What a sick, sad, scary time we live in. His son is only 5, and right now his only concern is,"How'd I do Daddy?" Let's hope it stays that way.

11. When I was his age, I was watching wounded/dead soldiers on the
nightly news. Are the loved ones of soldiers going to be the only ones aware of death/destruction of war? :(
