Thought for Today by Calvin Trillin
"A silver-lining view of George Bush's not attending military funerals, lest he become associated with bad news:

At least there's no Bush eulogy
On why they had to die.
It's better that they're laid to rest
Without another lie."

- THE NATION, December 1, 2003

1. Calvin Trillin is a national treasure.
And his poetry for The Nation is wonderful. He ought to put out a collection.

My personal favorite is the one he wrote on the fall of the Berlin Wall: (from memory)

This is the fate that could befall us
Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles.

2. Ooohh, Bad Calvin!!!
Bad, Bad!! Shame on you for not glorifying our fearless leader. :D

It's the truth though. If I had someone die in the War on the Abstract Noun, I'd fight like hell to keep him away. I woundn't want my family member exploited for his self-righteousness' sake.

6. I think he can write about any subject
and make it interesting. I especially enjoy his food writing in The New Yorker. It's more about the people involved than the food. He would be a wonderful dinner companion. I'd like to just wander around NYC with him and eat.
