Bush the invisible visitor brings no present for Blair
Bush the invisible visitor brings no present for Blair

(Filed: 19/11/2003)

Shortly before Air Force One touched down at Heathrow last night, it was announced that a visit this afternoon to the memorial in Grosvenor Square, London, to the victims of the September 11 had been called off.

The Foreign Office said the president's schedule had always been fluid, but fears over his security are believed to have played a part in the decision that he should meet families of the British victims inside the US embassy and not go outside to pay his respects at the memorial as originally planned.

With the visit already overshadowed by the prospect of large street protests over Iraq, Downing Street played down expectations of a diplomatic breakthrough on issues souring relations between the US and Europe.

The gloomy outlook for agreement on British detainees at Guantanamo Bay or averting a trade war with Europe by lifting US steel tariffs was a further setback for Mr Blair, who has expended considerable political capital in pressing ahead with the visit.

2. MSNBC/CNN had him landing in Middlesex at Army Base, NOT Heathrow!
So, who is correct, this article which says he landed at Heathrow or the
cables in the US who showed him deplaning in Middlesex at 2:40 p.m. est?
