45. A statistical analysis of this poll |
|
I ran the numbers here and thought yall might like to hear the results. Here's what I found.
If you allow the 37 voters to "split" their votes (several folks said it was a three- or two-way tie), then candidate totals for first place votes are: 13.7 votes (38%) - Dean 11.8 votes (33%) - Clark 4.83 votes (13%) - Edwards 3.33 votes (9%) - Kucinich 2.00 votes (6%) - Kerry 1.00 votes (3%) - Sharpton 0.33 votes (1%) - Moseley Braun
Measuring the ranking of candidates is a bit harder. As a compromise over more sophisticated tabulation systems (to which I don't have access) I used a more crude counting system. For first place choices, I allotted 9 points, for second place I gave 8 points, for third place 7 points, and so on until I got to the 9th place choice, who got 1 point. If the poster said there was a tie, they each got the next value of points available. Candidate not mentioned at all got no points at all. (*For example, if there's a tie for first place, then there is no second place choice. The next most popular is counted as the 3rd place choice)
Using this system, I calculated the ranking of support for the candidates this way:
Candidate - Pts - Avg Rank W. Clark - 251 - 7.0 H. Dean - 233 - 6.5 Edwards - 209 - 5.8 Jn. Kerry - 207 - 5.8 Kucinich - 184 - 5.1 Gephardt - 177 - 4.9 Mo-Braun - 153 - 4.3 Sharpton - 109 - 3.0 Lieberman - 71 - 2.0
To figure out who the strongest second choice candidate is, I calculated the value of points if you remove everybody's number one choice:
Candidate - Rank W. Clark - 5.7 Jn. Kerry - 5.4 Edwards - 4.9 Gephardt- 4.8 H. Dean - 4.7 Kucinich - 4.5 Mo-Braun- 4.0 Sharpton - 2.9 Lieberman- 2.0
From this (un-scientific) sample, it seems that Dean is the most polarizing candidate. He has the strongest one-vote-only total, but drops to 5th place when looking for secondary candidates. He was even out-ranked by Gephardt, who didn't get a single first place vote.
Although Dean got the most first place votes, Clark got the highest average ranking (averaging a 7.0 compared to 6.5 for Dean).
Clark (at 5.7) and Kerry (at 5.4) are the candidates most popular among those not supporting them for first place. This would make them the strongest unity candidates for the DU posters.

Interesting thoughts on "unity" candidates.
You might even want to post this as a separate thread for discussion.

But what is a Condorcet? What is an IRV? I was in market research, not a hard science, so my analysis uses no sophisticated mathmatical modeling. These are all quick n dirty approximations.
I only know that ordinal valuations are valid in micro economics, but may not hold up here because one voter's #3 choice may be far more desireable an alternative than somebody else's #2.

Kerry has dropped the most for me. He was initially my number two.
Kucinich has grown on me over the last several weeks.
These could change ... except for my number one.

Kucinich, Mosley-Braun and Sharpton, with the rest in a tie for next to last place. Last goes to LaRouche. I won't vote for him if he is the Dem nominee, but that's highly unlikely.

A lot can happen before an election, but...
Tier 1: Dean, Clark, Edwards
Tier 2: Kerry, Gephardt
Tier 3: (Most likeable; Least Likely): Kucinich, Sharpton, Moseley-Braun
{Huge Gap}
Tier 4 (Only because I'd rather have anyone but Bush): Lieberman

Clark Dean Edwards Kerry Gephardt Lieberman (ugh)
I only ranked candidates who I felt have some chance of beating Bush, my support gets rather wishy washy beyond my top three.

1) Dean 2) Clark or Edwards 3) Clark or Edwards 4) Braun 5) Lieberman 6) Sharpton 7) Kucinich 8) Gephardt 9) Kerry
To explain the bottom 3:
Kucinich is just too radical for my tastes. Gephardt and Kerry have lied about my state and my ex governor which automatically puts them at the bottom. Kerry gets last because I absolutely hate his plan to force kids to do community service in order to get their high school diploma.
