We had a great response to our call for moderators, and it was extremely difficult to narrow the field down to 20 people. We had to turn down dozens and dozens of very qualified people. We hope that everyone who applied to serve as a moderator this turn will consider applying again in two months.

As usual, we've got a number of new people who have never moderated before. These folks are going to need a few days to learn the ropes, so cut them a little slack and please try not to make their lives too difficult.

Please take a moment to say hello to our new moderators, and to express your gratitude to our retiring moderators.

Damnit, this is the second time I've applied, just what exactly are you looking for, anyway? My God, I'm on DU almost the whole freakin day, I'm not going away for the holidays, I've got almost 5,000 posts, a lot more than some of the new ones chosen, I've been here longer than some of the new ones, I can't afford to donate right now so it would have been my way of giving back, so WTF???????????????????????????? Jesus, in perfect keeping with the rest of my rotten week, when will ANYTHING go right? The hell with it, I'm never going to bother them by applying again!

Once again, we had a lot of people apply, and we had many more qualified people than we had spaces to fill. I feel bad that we can't take everyone.

All I know is that I've been here longer and have a lot more posts, as do some of the others who I know applied, than some of the newbies chosen, and I know for a fact that I and some of the other applicants are able to be on DU a lot more each day than some of the newbies chosen.

So I'm really not at all sure what exactly is meant by "qualified", but maybe, perhaps, it means "donated?" If so, I'm an overworked, vastly underpaid single mother who simply cannot afford to donate right now and who thought that this would be a good way to support and give back to DU. And if it means being all happy and Pollyanna-ish all the time, then that's not fair to a lot of applicants, either.

What I'm saying is that it just seems to me that "qualified" means something different in this respect than what it normally does, and I simply cannot understand why newbies with less time, much less posts, and who are on DU a lot less than me and some of the other applicants are considered somehow more "qualified." But never mind, I won't bother to apply again.

24. I am sorry that you think this has something to do with money.

We don't look at whether someone has donated, and we have had many moderators in the past who have not donated. I will point out that you yourself have a star.

None of our moderators are newbies. All but one of them has over 1000 posts. But to be honest, number of posts is not the most important thing in deciding whether someone is qualified to be a moderator. As long as they have enough, that's all we care about.

But as I said before, we had way more qualified people than we had positions to fill. The most important factor in becoming a moderator is just luck.

... I've appreciated working with these people and will continue to do so. They have impressed me, without exception, as remarkable and unique human beings, possessed of principles and passions not the least of which is an interest in serving to make our world, even this very small corner of it, just a little bit better through their efforts. I personally regard them as excellent representatives of our wonderfully diverse DU community - a perspective we sometimes overlook. It is not a pedestal that I offer, but an appreciation of each one as a mensch.

I'm sure as hell not gonna bother them by applying anymore after this time. If they'd rather have newbies that haven't been on here long enough to fully understand and be familiar with the workings of DU, and if they consider newbies with less time here, less posts, and less time to spend on DU to be more "qualified", whatever that means to them, than those of us who've applied several times before who are actual veterans with a lot more time and who are able to be on here a lot more and who understand DU more, then the hell with it, I ain't bothering again.

Get ready for a lot of hyper-reaction to threads from newbies who don't understand DU in the next few weeks. And I really think we're owed an explanation as to exactly what "qualified" means, and how mods are chosen so that we don't bother with useless applications anymore.
