Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 01:50 AM by Eric J in MN
America has enough nuclear power plants. We can't decide what to do with the radioactive waste we've got, but the 2003 Omnibus Energy Bill encourages building more.

The bill gives over a billion in subsidies to the nuclear power industry. It also says they are protected against lawsuits for the next 20 years if there is a meltdown.

Please send a free fax to your Senators against the bill at:

1. I Really Hate To Tell You This, But Peak Oil Will demand That We Build
more nuclear power plants before all is said and done.

The crux of the problem is peak gas used for electric generation. Natural Gas is running out and in the forseeable future there will not be enough to run current gas fired generating plants.

The alternative is coal and that will get us by for awhile. Ultimately, though, as Oil is depleted the demand for coal will grow and will not be able to meet our electric needs either.

So we will once again come back to nuclear to supple electricity.

5. I support wind power...
but lets be realistic how many windmills do we need in how much of an area to get the same ammount of power as from a nuclear reactor?

4. we need more nukes.
otherwise where will our power come from?

other than that, someone told me that if we could reprocess our some of our nuclear waste and get more use out of it, but that we dont do it because it would create more weapons grade plutonium.

Anyone know anything about this? I find it hard to believe that we wouldnt reuse nuclear waste if we could, just because it would make more weapons grade plutonium. One would think that our governments hypocracy would support that just because its what we dont want North Korea to do.

8. we don't need more nukes
and we definitely don't need the nuclear waste they'd create.

and yes, if worse came to worst, i'd rather freeze in the dark than have my children born with nuclear-induced genetic defects. people managed to live for thousands of years without nuclear power plants... we can live without them in the future, too. i'd rather freeze in the dark than glow in the dark.
