Gov. Bill Richardson today stopped short of calling Howard Dean the man to beat in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Barely.
<snip>
Richardson, a Democrat, is effectively barred from endorsing any of the nine Democrats now running for their party's nomination. As chairman of the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he has to remain neutral.
Still, after meeting with many of the candidates who have made swings through New Mexico, Richardson said he was particularly impressed by Dean.

Dean returned the favor today, calling Richardson "one of the foremost important political leaders in the country."
"He's a beacon of joy in the Southwest," for Democrats, Dean said.
Dean also captivated Indians attending the National Congress of American Indians this morning. What was supposed to be a closed-door meeting with Indian leaders became a standing-room-only question-and-answer session with Indian leaders, as Dean, who stands barely 5 feet 8 inches, was dwarfed by conference attendees who crowded into the room to see him.
