What would the world be like if President Gore was in office? |
|
How would he have handled this post September 11th parallel universe we find ourselves in? I remember shortly after it happened, many people who voted for him were saying, "Wow, I'm really glad Bush is in the White House after all, I don't thing Gore would have had the guts to go after terrorists like he does" and other utter nonsense.
I feel certain that whatever he had done, the world would be a much safer, stabler, saner place than it is today or is likely to be for many years to come.
Any thoughts?

Bush machine personal. Perhaps a ranch in Crawford might have been blown to bits, but 3,000 people would be going to their jobs this morning if Gore were president.

14. Gore wouldn't have been asleep at the wheel, he would have read |
|
the security briefings, and because he was involved in a commission that investigated terrorism and aviation he would probably have paid attention to reports of terrorists possibly using airplanes as weapons: Gore Commission Final Report http://www.airportnet.org/depts/regulatory/goreini.htm

I think WTC would still be there...if however it was hit, I think we would have caught Osama and Iraq wouldnt have happened. Also, I think we would have signed onto Kyoto and the International Court. There would be civil unions for federal employees. I think Enron would have still happened because Clinton/Gore were pushing the deregulation gravy train. We wouldnt have a huge debt because there wouldnt have been the tax cuts. That is my view.

bullshit to me.
I think they would have attacked us regardless.
That being said, I'm not sure how it would be different. I think we would have still gone to Afghanistan, but definately not Iraq.
Maybe if Gore won it would have given us the momentum to win more elections and now be in such a terrible position as we are now.

16. Don't think we would have invaded Afghanistan |
|
It was too hard.
No friendly countries to invade from. No where to station our troops. No ports for resupply. Potential to destabilize Pakistan and the whole region. Don't want to bribe unfriendly governments. Too much potential for quagmire. What if Pakistan turns on us while we're commited in Afghanistan? Don't want to work with the Northern Alliance drug runners and warlords.
I think we would have lobbed missiles and the main story today would be tightening sanctions on the Taliban government for the 58th time while the Taliban and Osama are openly defiant.
I don't see anything in Gore's history that would lead him to take such a gamble like that.
Not that this is a bad thing, because I don't think Gore would have been reckless enough to have invaded Iraq either.

...on some thin pretext by the rabid right.
...but 400+ of our fellow citizens would still be alive. And thousands would have never seen the inside of a military hospital.

but we wouldn't be in Iraq for sure. The other day I was watching this show about the Kennedys on PBS and thinking what a different country it would be if JFK hadn't been assassinated. Things would have been completely different and probably much better for everyone.

21. Gore wouldn't have stood down the Air Force |
|
Assume the terrorists were able to get through all the layers of security that were asleep on the job that fateful morning. President Gore's Air Force would have responded the way President Clinton's did when Payne Stewart's plane went off course: They would have put a couple of F-16s in the air on each jetliner. But unlike the Stewart incident, when it was determined that the planes contained people with bad intentions, the Air Force would have shot the four planes down, and Gore would now be under investigation by the Repugs for "murdering" a couple hundred civilians on four airplanes.
Then we would have gone after Osama with gusto, and we'd have nailed his ass at Tora Bora.
