The Real Celebrity Justice Double Standard-Michael Jackson & Rush Limbaugh |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 09:40 PM by David Zephyr
Question: Why were Kobe Bryant and Michael Jackson arrested for felony crimes while Ken Lay and "Rush" Limbaugh still remain without charges?
Answer: Kobe and Michael are Black.
And while I'm at it, here's my new name for the "Rush" Limbaugh Radio Show: Op Ed from the Hop Head.

Both Kobe and Michael are accused of violent crimes that have real victims. Rush, had no victims. These crimes are different. Lay, on the other hand, I will give you, though I think his ties to Bush are more important than skin color. After all, Martha is white and she is charged with several felonies.

Whereas Lay and Limabugh are not.
That is the difference (not that they shouldn't be in jail either it's just that the charges are more serious).

Lay's crime resulted in suicides, foreclosures, broken homes, seniors losing everything they had, millions of Californians bilked for billions of dollars and he's not even "under investigation".
It's because they are white.

Jackson and Bryant should just be forgotten because other unrelated cases aren't going as we would like? That's ridiculous and that thinking is truly racist. Get them! THEIR white! All of us in the black community must begin to see the plank in our own eye and quit raising one generation after another taught how to be victims. The answer is to prosecute ALL crimes equally. Rush/Kobe/Lay/Jackson are all totally unrelated. To make general statements about race (like in your thread) is what keeps our party from advancing across the country.

Where did I say that Jackson and Bryant should be forgotten? I am pointing out that in all of the hoopla about the "double standard that celebritys receive" such as Michael getting to turn himself in on his own schedule, that there is NOT ONE IOTA of concern that a certain white celebrity---who has demanded stiff sentences for drug users and who has been making his employee illegally procure drugs for him---has not even been charged for a crime that he has admitted to.
And with regards to Ken Lay, well, please explain the fact that he is "not under investigation"?
My point, which you made, is that Limbaugh and Lay should have already been brought up on felony charges. The fact that they have not been and that there is no outrage smacks of a double standard within the distribution of "justice" in America.
When you write: All of us in the black community must begin to see the plank in our own eye and quit raising one generation after another taught how to be victims." You surely are not justifying the incredible disproportionate number of African-American males in prison in America versus White Males are you? I believe that the "plank" that you suggest is in an African-American's eye is no worse than any plank in a White American's eye.
But when you write: "The answer is to prosecute ALL crimes equally," then you and I are on the same page and that is the purpose of my thread.
And when the prison population of America demographically is representative of the U.S. population, then I'll believe there is no "double standard"...but not until then.

Do you think a man charged with molestation would have his arrest arranged and then after posting a huge amount of bail, let go to fly off to neverland? It's celebrity stupid.

15. Why Aren't Ken Lay and Rush Limbaugh Charged With Felonies? |
|
After two-three years? Lay is not even "under investigation".
They can also afford $3,500/hour attorneys. So, it is not the celebrity status that separates these four men in regards to which are charged with felonies and which are not.
Check out the demographics of U.S. prison populations and then come back and tell me that race has nothing to do with who is charged and prosecuted and imprisoned in America.

You posted that one year ago on my birthday, NSMA!
And it is still as vital today as then. This is the heart of my thread, which you got. Not that Kobe and Michael are blameless (we don't know yet), but that they are charged and two prominent white Republican men who are without any doubt whatsoever guilty as hell (one has admitted it) have not been charged at all...after years!
This stat from your post last year should be instructive to all DU'ers on the subject of justice in America:
:The pattern of racial bias in these statistics is confirmed by the research of the US Commission on Civil Rights, which found that while African Americans today constitute only 14% of all drug users nationally, they are 35% of all drug arrests, 55% of all drug convictions, and 75% of all prison admissions for drug offenses."

Yes, he gets extra perks because he's a celebrity, but he also gets a boatload of extra crap by virtue of the very same celebrity.
A man charged with molestation who is not a celebrity would not have had a $3 million bail, would not have been the subject of a nationally televised live press conference by the sheriff and DA nor would his surrender have been covered live on every cable network. I don't think it's unreasonable, under those circumstances, to provide Michael Jackson an extra measure of courtesy and privacy - particularly considering that the police and DA's actions have helped to prompt such enormous publicity and made it nearly impossible for him to quietly turn himself in.
It balances out, in my view.

19. Of Course there's a double standard! Duh!!!! Is the sky blue? |
|
They changed the law specifically for Michael Jackson. How do you force a kid to testify? In all the priest abuse cases, nobody thought to change the law in that instance, or to prevent the church from paying people off.
People kill me trying to deny the double-standard. Why is it soooo hard to admit. People have no understanding of how the criminal justice system works at all.

22. Much Thanks, Wise Soloman. |
|
And your excellent observation about the law being changed in order to "get" Michael Jackson in light of the complete overlooking the crimes of White Catholic Priests is a powerful one. It is something I had not even considered before and now, after reading your post, is truly an indictment of "justice" in our land.
Brilliant observation, Soloman!

28. the double standard in question is more monitary than racial |
|
I have no problem changing laws to insure that a wealthy pedophyle cannot buy his way out of prosecution. They should also have made a law to retroactively prosecute that boy's parents for obstruction of justice for taking the buyout and leaving him free to prey on children for another ten years.
More to the point, the differences are denoted by violence. And none of them are behind bars are they ?
While there is an obvious racial double standard, this is not much of an example.

20. Buying tens of thousands of black-market narcotics is just as bad |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 11:18 PM by Dr Fate
...apparently Rush has personally put 100's of thousands of dollars into the criminal underworld- thanks to his appetite for "heroin-like" narcotics...
Who knows what other crimes will be committed, now that he has personally funded the criminal narcotics underworld...
What will that money go towards, Rush? More murder? More drugs to fall into the hands of young school-children? TERRORISM???
Being addicted to needle drugs is bad enough, but Rush has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on them and has personally funded the criminal drug underworld- he deserves to be in jail.
I am Liberal as far as pot & beer goes, but All large volume buyers/dealers/users of black-market narcotics need to be dealt with- this is dangerous stuff...
