G.O.P. to Run an Ad for Bush on Terror Issue. (amazingly awful read)
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/21/politics/campaigns/21REPU.html?hp

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 — After months of sustained attacks against President Bush in Democratic primary debates and commercials, the Republican Party is responding this week with its first advertisement of the presidential race, portraying Mr. Bush as fighting terrorism while his potential challengers try to undermine him with their sniping.

The new commercial gives the first hint of the themes Mr. Bush's campaign is likely to press in its early days. It shows Mr. Bush, during the last State of the Union address, warning of continued threats to the nation: "Our war against terror is a contest of will, in which perseverance is power," he says after the screen flashes the words, "Some are now attacking the president for attacking the terrorists."

By indirectly invoking the Sept. 11 attacks, the commercial plays to what White House officials have long contended is Mr. Bush's biggest political advantage: his initial handling of the aftermath of the attacks.

1. we need to hear our candidates denounce this immediately
we are NOT attacking Bush for attacking the terrorists.

we are saying the truth: that Bush invaded and has occupied a sovereign nation.

plus, Bush's initial handling was to read a child's book and then flee around the country.

:puke:

2. They're implying (or will) that 'Saddam was a terrorist'
See how this is going to go? A lot of people will have trouble seeing that. The Dems can make the case but I do not think Dean is the one to make it. Clark or Kerry or even Gephardt yes.

3. i can imagine Dean...
running an ad this early countering this new Bushit message -- pick a few key markets that have seen the * ad and have Dean say something like:

"Hi, I'm Howard Dean. The war against terror is utter bullshit, and the president is a lying bastard."

no, no, wait, that's the ad i *WISH* he could run...

but, he could do something like this:

"Hi, I'm Howard Dean. I'm running for President because there are serious threats against our nation that the Bush administration has failed to address. There are the threats of failing schools, healthcare, and the erosion of civil rights here are home. Abroad, we face growing resentment for a foreign policy based on petulance. I approve this message, because only you have the power to defend our country."

or something to that effect. but, whatever the copy, it would reinforce the message that Dean is runnign against Bush, not the other Dems.

6. No, we are now attacking him for attacking innocent civilians
We are also attacking him for putting our soldiers in the bulls-eye as targets to be attacked by insurgents.

They're actually using quotes from his SOTU speech? Do they really want to bring up that 16-word fiasco again? There is so much ammunition against bush that it boggles the mind.
