This week's Bill Moyers NOW - growing economic inequality in the U.S.
http://www.pbs.org/now/thisweek/index.html

This week on NOW:

NOW traces the roots of the growing economic inequality in the U.S. and illustrates the sometimes forgotten human toll of government policies that favor corporations over individuals through three compelling stories.

First, NOW examines NAFTAÕs role in the impending extinction of a cherished American way of life in the story of a once-thriving Pennsylvania mill town and the hardworking residents plunged into the desperate ranks of the working poor in Winners and Losers.
http://www.pbs.org/now/transcript/transcript_winnersandlosers.html
http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/retrainmap.html

Then, NOW reports on the tangible human costs of financial deregulation laws passed in the late 1990s by corporate-friendly politicians and the WorldCom collapse that stole the future away from so many individual investors in Rewriting the Rules.
http://www.pbs.org/now/transcript/transcript_rules.html
http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/worldcom.html
http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/sec2.html

Finally, NOW tells the tale of the best intentions derailed by corporate greed in a profile of a Republican governorÕs thwarted bid to reform the nation's most regressive tax system and level the playing field for AlabamaÕs poor in Tax Justice.

4. This IS the #1 issue, face it or not.
Wealth and income stratification, not Tommy Frank's fear-mongering, is what threatens our Constitution.

2. The J curve of Rising Expecations is reaching a critical point
When more Americans realize the truth of what the Republicans have done to the average working man and woman, and how they are dismantling democracy in favor of Plutocracy, there will be a revolution. In the meantime, keep on clicking that remote control to find an amusing sitcom. It will help to mute the pain of the truth.

12. Agree with This Is the no. 1 issue by a laong shot and we should make
it our battle call. The repugs being in bed with Big Business is an issue that could make this election an easy one to win. Jobs goin overseas, low wages, stagnant min wage, corrupt corporations bleeding us dry....I saw where Dean made rereg a goal of his and to me its his strongest point. Nothing else can come close to people and there paychecks and we could really take this and run with it.

13. I agree with you.
job loss and our trade agreements should be major platform issues. I honestly think this is the way to win in states like North and South Carolina where so many people have lost jobs in the textile and furniture industries.

20. Agreed...
and the fear mongering, the terra alerts, the Patriot (excuse me while I throw up) Act, all serve to distract us while the Repiggies loot the treasury. These are convenient diversions for these people, who will stop at nothing to suck up everything they can, while they can.

21. Partisan politics and corporations
Can anyone tell me the major differences between the two parties on corporate control? Both the WTO and NAFTA were supported by and passed during the Clinton administration. Corporations buy and sell both parties like cheap hookers. Who is going to effectively represent us in this environment? Campaign money, not voters, are what matters.

26. MONEY rules
That segment on the Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 had by blood boiling!!!!

Clinton was smart enough to veto it, but Dem TURNCOATS like FEINSTEIN, LIEBERMAN, MOSLEY-BRAUN, ROCKEFELLER and more helped the Rethuglicans to pass it over his veto!

This is part and parcel of the reason the pirates of wall street will NOT BE PUNISHED.

We cannot afford to forget this!

I don't see how anyone can vote for these people again.

Maybe I shouldn't say this because some of those people are trying to become president but HONESTLY! For anyone that didn't see NOW last night, this Act made it possible for accountants, analysts, and board members to LIE about forecasts and excused most of them from being held accountable!

22. This "scam" also redistributes Electoral votes
As people who lose their jobs move south or west in hopes of finding work, the formerly industrial states continue to lose representation..

It's a double whammy..

The people who were union people with well paying jobs, morph into faceless, underrepresented people in service economy jobs , in states that do little or nothing to help them.. By moving there, they increase the stranglehold of the same folks who put them in their dire straits..

Whether it's by design or accident, the result is the same..
