Italian leader visits Israel in bid to legitimize party
By Amiram Barkat, Haaretz Correspondent
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini, the
leader of Italy's National Alliance party, was due
to arrive Sunday evening for an official visit in
Israel.
<snip>
The seemingly routine itinerary does not disclose the visit's historic significance. This is the first time a leader of the
former post-fascist party, associated with wartime dictator Benito Mussolini, is to be received in Israel with pomp and ceremony.
Commentators say Fini's visit is meant to pave the way to his running for prime minister in Italy's next elections.

Considered one of the most brilliant and sophisticated politicians in Italy,
Fini started out as a member of a racist youth
movement. His left-wing rivals embarrassed him in the past by showing an old photograph of him making the Nazi salute and by quoting his praises of Mussolini, whom he called "the
greatest politician of the 20th century." Fini has since retracted that statement and denounced Mussolini.
