Geph has a winning issue here in PA.....country of origin labeling |
|
we've had dozens hospitalized and a couple deaths from an outbreak of hepititis which seems to have come from green onions at a Chi-chi's restaurant. several outbreaks have also been reported down south. The outbreak has brought to light the differing standards of hygeine in many of the countries from which we import food. Geph's move to require country of origin labeling on our food may seem like a little thing but it will stick in the mind whenever people think of where their lettuce etc was grown.

3. Interesting idea, but... |

does anyone have any idea just how much we import from Mexico, and other places?
Aside from questions about whether or not it's a good idea to import produce when we can grow our own, we are probably going to continue doing it. This was a rare occurence, considering the vast amount of stuff we get from there, and it may be a bit more worthwhile to try enforcing health standards than throwing blame and scares around.
We do have our own problems with food, although hep A doesn't appear to be one of them. Note the recalls over rotten meat, peanuts, and whatever else.
Note also the amount of food rejected at ports of entry for various reasons. Not one nation can say it hasn't had had something rejected.
A fun talking point, but ultimately useless and unworkable.
