Republicans for Dean
I'm unaware of any significant support from Republicans for any Democratic candidate other than for Howard Dean.

If the goal is to beat Bush, having some Republicans enthusiastic about the democratic candidate is a huge asset. Particularly Michael Cudahy and Hilary Cleveland who know how to talk to Republicans.

Are there any other significant Republican endorsements of Dean (or another Dem)?

This looks really nice to me:

1. There was and I think still is a Republican for Clark site
The draft Clark movement was started by a Democrat and a Republican who are brother in laws. and yes for the General election it is huge to have a republican site for the candidate, but Dean is not the first and I would have to question the motivation.

2. One of the original Draft Clarksters was a Republican.

I'd say that both Clark and Dean have a sizeable GOP contingent (on edit: meaning, lots of Republicans on board for them)
There are even Young Republicans for Clark, etc.

My concern for Dean is that he doesn't burn the bridges within HIS OWN PARTY.

3. Sharpton
He gets most of his donations in large amounts.

He is the guy who the Republicans are going to use to try to pry the minority vote away from the Dem nominee.

He has already exhibited what will be his slogan when he attacked Dean's record as "anti-black".

He might pull a Ralph Nader, calling the Dem nominee just as bad for minorities as Bush. If he gets 5% to stay home, that's five less percent for the Democrats to count on in 2004.

4. Republicans want Dean nominated because they are behind Bush
and they know he's almost as easy a dem to beat as Kucinich or Braun would or Sharpton would be.

It's a given that alot of his cash is coming from Bush supporters. A donation to him is worth alot more to them than a donation to Bush.

5. I could probably trace the numbers and disprove what you are saying.
I doubt any more than 10k has come from Republicans(misguided) who think Dean would be easy to beat.

.

I've read 2 articles in Boston area newspapers and one online from a New Hampshire newpaper where republicans have admitted sending him money for the very reasons I illustrated and the only 2 colleges with young republicans I have aquaintances in(UNH and UofM in Florida) both have held mini-fundraisers for him.

And those are just the people who've admitted to it that I've happened to come across.

10. I know of at least one huge Bushite
who has given $500 or so to Dean, because Dean is a joke to him -- a symbol, he says, of the 'self-destructive and childish anger that has sabotaged the Democrats since Vietnam.' That's almost a direct quotation. This guy is a former Vietnam-era hippie, extremely bright, extremely successful, and extremely cynical. He thinks Bush is a joke too, a bumbling puppet without the spine to stand up to either the right or the left, but he prefers the Republican joke that is Bush to any Democrat, and what he really wants is a big Republican majority in Congress, which would be a far more enduring accomplishment out of this election cycle than a Bush win.

But keep cherishing your illusions. Howard Dean is all. Howard Dean is downward tall. And look on the bright side: you can't lose. If Dean wins the nomination and the general election, you win. If he loses the general election, you get to seethe and rage on message boards about how awful he is for another four years.

7. Republicans money is just as good as Dems money
I doubt Howard is turning it down and it helps
him put out more ads against Bush. Bush is vulnerable
on all sorts of issues next year. And if Dean
is the Dem nominee and everyone who opposes Bush
votes for Dean, he wins. Not rocket science.

8. Yeah, how is that logic different from a McGovern-supporter in 72?
I'm sure that they were'nt upset that Segretti was F'ing with Muskie's campaign and helping McGovern get the nomination,

after all, 68 was a close race, McGovern must have just as good a general election shot as Muskie?

You seem to have no faith in the faithful...
This is a different race in a different time.

11. I have faith in logic not emotion

and I see that Dean's campaign is fueled by alot more of the latter than the former.

People get furious when I say I probably have a better understanding of modern national elections than a majority here at DU, but it's not as if I'm insulting people because ignorance of the inticrasies of political scince or PPA is the norm anywhere in America.

12. I ask you to prove it...
Please provide your sources to back up this claim. I have heard this before and so far nobody has been to show that this is a fact.
