My Dad made it official to me this weekend... |
|
Let me start by saying a lot of the time when people come in with their "I talked to a Repug who hates Bush" stories, for whatever reason, I'm a little skeptical. It must be my nature.
All that being said, my Dad has been making it known to me over the past few years that he is VERY unhappy w/ Bush and his policies. For a little background, my dad is a lifelong Republican. He's a union truck driver and a very hard worker w/ some (trying to put this mildly) strong biases against people of other races (much to my dismay).:-(
He came into town this weekend, and we talked at length about Bush. He sees that so many of Bush's policies and priorities are geared toward the wealthy. He physically HATES the guy. He even picked apart the Medicare bill before I had a chance!
I told him, "If you think it's bad now, imagine if he gets re-elected..." He said he won't be voting for him again...

Now all we have to do is make sure those voting machines don't get in the way of all those people who're turning against Bush.

9. His racial issues lead him to the GOP... |
|
He's of that mindset that thinks the Democrats "give to much to the blacks"....:-(

5. This is great, but I am skeptical just like you.... |
|
I know many people like your dad. They are republicans who are disgusted with the current prez and his policies. In the abstract they say they won't be voting for him.
Then cut to November '04, after months of being bombarded with news stories and ads about the "liberal" democratic nominee, throw in a few terror warnings and 9/11 retrospectives and they will resign themselves despite their misgivings to still pull the lever for bush.
I'm convinced of this.

6. I keep imagining the conversation |

I'm gonna end up having with one of my best friends. We've gotten to see precious little of each other this year, but will be hanging out during the holidays, I'm sure. Chuck is a former Citadel grad, an Army brat, and a lifelong Repub. He is also an atheist and pretty libertarian where social concerns are, so he's hard to pidgeon-hole, but he is exasperatingly rigid about his politic beliefs and values unwavering ideology above all else (Ex: he once damned Pat Buchanan as a half-a-Nazi, but then complimented him that 'at least he's been consistent over the years'), and I just know the flood gates are gonna open as soon as I say
"So how can you possibly vote for Bush again?"
I'm glad Wes is in the show, and I'm slowly choosing sides with the Clarkies, partially because like Chuck, who is semi-erect at the sight of olive-drab, cannot pull the patented 'elitist pacifist lib' routine.
