2. Yes, the world..............
would stop spinning if it weren't for America. Actually I guess it would, if all of the sudden America's land mass were to disappear, the effect on the world would be devastating. The earth would tilt off it's axis and hurtle outward into space.
Forgive me, I need coffee.
This country is a bit parochial in their thinking, it's always about us.

3. And listening to some of these stupid callers got me in stiches....
I'm waiting for someone to call and say; "We should all love one another, as Gods loves us"

4. Actually,
(sorry for being the devil's advocate here), the rest of the world IS thankful for the United States. They're thankful that the world's biggest economy is wealthy enough to buy their goods. They're glad we're around to be the "policeman" of the world, checking up on injustices of the world.

But do they like us?

5. Yes. On a level with Greece, in the "seed of civilization" department.
But, you know, it's like soccer. Englishmen invented it, but some other countries do it better now.

7. Since neither "America" nor "the World" is ONE thing
Edited on Thu Nov-27-03 12:56 PM by markses
The question means absolutely nothing. Or rather, the question assumes a violent unity on both sides, a wrenching of a vast multiplicity into one thing (America). What world?

The question itself display the WORST aspects of the multiplicity called "America" - it's most destructive elements: those which see a vast and variable multiplicity (either America or the World) and seek to reduce it to one thing, unified, coherent. All such projects are violent in the extreme. "Just make it a thing I can grasp, and Master!" shout these elements of America (or the World - Osama bin Laden partakes of the same pathology) - our worst elements, the world's worst elements.

On this day, I'm thankful for all that escapes these reductions - that is, the life instinct - all that lives and feels no need to justify existence by reducing it to a graspable thing. All those minor elements, slipping out of their clutches all the time, that Asian violinist, playing in Washington Square Park beneath the fast-moving clouds; a smile without a face; the mycelium, spreading in all directions, around us, everywhere.

The rest of the world now has a single common enemy. Thanks, Generalissimo Arbusto, for making it easy for them!

9. The question is too simplistic
It's impossible to answer in one word, or one sentence, or one paragraph. It all depends on what angle you take. But then in taking an angle, you can also ask questions within that angle.
