Black Box Voting: HR 2239 has 84 co-sponsors
Edited on Thu Nov-27-03 02:57 PM by Eric J in MN
HR 2239, Rep. Rush Holt's (D-NJ) bill to require a voter-verified paper trail, has 84 co-sponsors.

Do you think that if that increases to over 100 co-sponsors, it will get a vote on the House floor?

1. It would be lovely
if we could do this.

How do we get around the part where the voter gets a receipt stating whom he voted for, but the tally inside the machine actually ticks over for Bush? (Haven't read the resolution yet. Is there a part that says the insides of these boxes are open to scrutiny??)

2. the bill requires counts of the paper ballots at .5 percent
Edited on Thu Nov-27-03 03:13 PM by Eric J in MN
The bill requires counts of the paper ballots at .5 percent of districts.

Also, if exit polls raise suspicion, there is a paper trail (though the bill doesn't mention exit polls).

If it were up to me, the auditing would be different, but at least it's something.

My auditing proposal:
1) The machine operators provide their totals to the auditors.
2) In each district, the auditors make sure that the total number of paper ballots corresponds to those totals, and then recounts 1% of paper ballots after random sorting to make sure the percentages are similar.

HR 2239 also says the software can't be secret:

" `(i) No voting system shall at any time contain or use undisclosed software. Any voting system containing or using software shall disclose the source code of that software to the Commission, and the Commission shall make that source code available for inspection upon request to any citizen."

6. Not only that (and even better IMO)
at least three of those co-sponsors are Republican. AND, finally, one GA Congressman, the venerable John Lewis, is among them.

Please contact your Congressmen and women AND Senators, especially the Republican ones.
