Do you think Dean can win Texas in the primaries?
He seems to have a lot of support down there. Any polling?

And I've seen about six Dean bumperstickers and one SUV with a huge Dean Sign on it's back side window.

3. I think he can
Ann Richards has said many nice things about Dean. And he has a huge base of support there. Note the Texas Rangers who traveled in the hundreds to Iowa and New Hampshire to knock on doors for Dean. They seem to be highly organized and up to the task. It's a good question.

Dean blasts Bush in Texas campaign stop

12/04/2003
By LIZ AUSTIN / Associated Press

Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean brought his grass-roots message to the heart of Bush country Thursday, blasting the president for the Iraq war and his health care and tax policies.

Dean, a former Vermont governor, repeatedly criticized Bush for his tax-cut package, which he said put money in the hands of big corporations and rich Republicans at the expense of ordinary taxpayers.

"Borrow and spend, borrow and spend. This is a credit-card presidency," Dean told about 300 people at a $150-a-plate fund-raiser at a Dallas hotel. "His fiscal model is Argentina. We can do better than that."

Dean also accused the president of misleading Americans about Saddam Hussein's role in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to persuade them to support the war in Iraq. He also said Bush has ignored the basic health care needs of millions of people and has divided the nation in his criticism of affirmative action.

7. Texas Here
I think he will do well in some areas. Clark will do very well in East Texas, South Texas as well major cities of DFW, and Houston.

8. It'll be heavy clark
for the people who hear helicopters constantly flying overhead everytime Bush visits his 'Crawford Ranch.' I know at least one Southern Baptist who is so disenchanted with Bush on Iraq that he's gonna come on over to our side.

18. See this is what I like about him. He doesn't write anyplace off...
That's going to be the thing to win. Unlike some who won't even vote on a critical legislative issue in Congress because they won't have enough votes to prevail.

19. Me too!
He had me the day I heard him say he wouldn't concede any state. And I have seen him running a general election campaign from the very begining.
I have been a Dean supporter since his "What I wanna know" speech to the DNC last winter. I realized he could appeal to a wide range of voters shortly thereafter, and he HAS!!

27. Kucinich was in Houston Wednesday.
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 10:50 AM by GOPisEvil
Edwards has raised a lot of money from his trial lawyer connections. Kerry was in Texas once or twice that I know of.

Edit - Kucinich also stopped in Austin on the day he formally announced. He made a lot of stops that day, but Austin was one.

11. I think he can.
I have been calling folks in Galveston County to round up people for the caucus, (calling previous Dem caucus goers), and the majority have been either leaning Dean or supporting Dean strongly. Only two mentioned other candidates, and the rest (about half) were undecided. Put that with the great response he has had when he has visited Texas, I really think he's got us. I haven't seen the same enthusiasm for any other candidate. the only other candidate bumper sticker I have seen in the greater Houston area is 1 for Kucinich.

15. Sure, with some momentum
Clark is the only one that can battle Dean in Texas. In the end, if Dean can gather a little momentum going into Super Tuesday, Texas will go Dean.

13. I've talked to some phone pollers
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 10:35 PM by Capn Sunshine
the sentiment is Clark is doing pretty good, Dean is strongest and of course there's things going on right now there ,AP I think and maybe Marist might be there --- no Zogby org or Harris or anything yet. Probably after the first of the year.

However, our Texas Meetups are growing and very strong ; IMO the key to the Texas Dem vote will be Latino polling. Dean is doing good with them and speaks good spanish. Otoh I think Gen. Clark speaks spanish also and is polling well within the national Latino community.

we'll hear more in January since the primary is in March.

A larger question will be can Clark win a primary prior to then? If he was MY guy I'd be shooting for strong # 2 in NH and a win maybe in Carolina?

Don't forget that some of the first Dean campaign TV commercials were broadcast in Tejas.

23. No, Texas is not "in play"
If Dean beats Bush in Texas I'll run through the streets naked and change my name to Cinderella.

Dean might prevail in the Democratic primary, but there is zero chance he'll win the state in November.
