NY Times ignores Kucinich in its coverage of the debate
"kucinich" not found in the NY Times story on the debate last night:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/10/politics/campaigns/10DEBA.html

What a surprise!

43. I saw the debates, Kucinich got the longest, loudest applause
of the entire evening. He did a masterful job at keeping the issues on the table despite the best efforts of the actors, er, moderators, to ignore everything except for horse race questions.

Kucinich does *very* well in the debate format, and he's so smart and knowledable he can keep on his feet under a variety of circumstances.

57. 2 quicktime clips
Damn, it was good to see Kucinich burn Kopel for asking irrelevant questions...

For any that missed it, I've created two clips in Quicktime format. Actually, they are mpeg-4 encoded so you may be able to view them without quicktime, but I don't know about that. If you don't have quicktime installed (or have an old version that doesn't play mpeg4) you can download the free player from apple.

This clip is about 15 minutes into the debate and only one question was being posed to all candidates... "What do you think about the Gore endorsement of Dean?"

http://loeppert.net/Govt/Clips/KucinichMediaBurn1.m.mov

The question of money and poll standing was posed to Sharpton, Kucinich and Braun.

http://loeppert.net/Govt/Clips/KucinichMediaBurn2.m.mov

PS. The slightly choppy audio was due to a background computation during video capture, sorry about that.

5. the AP includes him…
The nine candidates stood at wooden podiums arranged in a semicircle on the stage of a theater on the University of New Hampshire campus. Some Democrats have suggested that the debates have been unwieldy and should be limited to the major candidates. One of the long-shot candidates, Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, took exception to Koppel's questions and used them to challenge the political status quo.

"I want the American people to see where media takes politics in this country," Kucinich said to cheers from the crowd. "We start talking about endorsements, now we're talking about polls and then talking about money. When you do that you don't have to talk about what's important to the American people."

7. Morality aside, that's just hideously bad journalism
By the definition of what is a story, that which elicits the greatest response, strays from the norm in a provocative way and literally stops a formal event cold with a collective gasp IS A STORY. Regardless of his chances or any other qualifier of his "worth", his deliberate accusations against the guilty, immoral Koppel and the complicit press, and his pointed accusation of the Bush Administrations attempt to control Iraq's Oil were electrifying. These were veritable bombs being thrown, and they were done with control, mastery and directness.

That was simply THE story of the night. Not to mention this at all is a lie against the essence of journalism.

I guess it somehow wasn't "fit to print".

Damn that liberal media.

A little confession here...DK was the first candidate who got my attention, it was that story about the battle with Cleveland power company that cost him his job as mayor. If he was a stronger candidate and a little stronger on foreign policy stuff I would vote for him in a second.

All the candidates did very well, even Kerry who usually puts me to sleep.

51. Kucinich has money
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 12:12 PM by goodhue
He has raised over 4.5 million to date. That is well over ten times more than Sharpton and Mosley Braun. Yet the mainstream media insists on categorizing him as "vanity." Although his 4.5 million is less than raised by say Edwards or Dean, it is much more than the other two so-called "vanity" candidates and certainly makes him viable if the media would provide coverage. But the polls/coverage Catch-22 allows the media to ignore a very real grassroots phenomena. Dennis will be in the race until at least the convention. If you like what you hear from him, please consider helping the cause . . .

63. what about it?
It appears true as of Oct 15. But so what? I guess Ted thinks 3/4 million is chump change but certainly it isn't to Dennis.

Can't say that the cash on hand figure is current since Dennis has raised $1.1 million since then. A good resource is open secrets . . .

http://www.opensecrets.org/presidential/index.asp

They have the numbers current as of Oct 15. The numbers there show $3.4 million raised by DK with $785K on hand. The $4.5 million figure is from the campaign and reflects approx fundraising to date I believe.

Again it is all relative, whether talking total receipts or cash on hand. Dennis clearly has less money than the "established" candidates but has much more than Sharpton and Mosley-Braun. My point is that lumping Dennis with Al & Carol in terms of fundraising is a disservice to the millions DK has in fact raised.

Again, best thing to do is help DK out by giving him more . . .
https://www.kucinich.us/contribute.php

And remember matching funds will be infusing DK with millions more come January!

15. YOU think Kucinich is a joke, his supporters certainly don't.

The fact is that he is a legitimate candidate for the Democratic nomination and campaigning as hard as anyone else. He was very strong in tonight's debate, criticizing the media (including the debate moderators) for their focus on endorsements, polls, and money raised, while not asking questions about issues, which the people want to hear.

Kucinich was right tonight, as he always is. He's the only candidate who voted against both the war and the Patriot Act. He's the only one who pledges to make support of Roe v. Wade a litmus test for his nominees to the Supreme Court and the only one to promise to seek federal recognition of gay marriage.

I don't think his plans to bring the troops home, set up single-payer universal health care through opening Medicare to all Americans, repeal NAFTA and WTO and replace them withbilateral fair trade treaties, guarantee full Social Security retirement benefits at 65, and repeal the Patriot Act are jokes. I think they are great ideas that all Dems should be supporting. And he has many more great ideas.

Dennis Kucinich also has a proven history of keeping promise she makes to the voters.

55. His supporters are delusional and clueless about our political system
Dennis Kucinich is just an annoying fringe candidate with no money, no support, and bizarre ideas for how he would "govern" the country (e.g. Department of Peace). Plus he's an obscure member of the House, and people like that don't usually get much coverage unless they're involved in a scandal (Janklow) or in the leadership (Gephardt). Sorry folks, but that's just the way it is.

Don't forget the idea that American people should really participate in the democratic process. Starting with listening to substantive debates between candidates so that they can make an educated choice. And of course, knowing that their vote will actually count for the person they voted for.

I swear, if FDR ran today he would be ignored and dismissed as a crank candidate. That is how low the Democratic party and the media have fallen to. DK is the ONLY TRUE Democratic candidate not beholden to the corporate powers, and that scares them. Thus he is ignored and belittled as a crank candidate.

I really hope he decideds to hell with it and runs as a Green. I think that a Green campaign for him would garner the magic 5% number. It is really sad that a person has to go to a completely different party to find the ideals that the Democratic party once stood for.

38. The manufacture of consent continues
That's why centrists are portrayed as progressives in order to give the appearance of a genuine debate taking place in the US. The real thing is much too dangerous.

Just in case anyone isn't familiar with Chomsky/Herman's brilliant The Manufacture of Consent, here's the link to Amazon. By far the best read for anyone who labors under the delusion the United States media is fair and balanced.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375714499/103-0971689-2781419?v=glance

Book Description
In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

Based on a series of case studies—including the media’s dichotomous treatment of “worthy” versus “unworthy” victims, “legitimizing” and “meaningless” Third World elections, and devastating critiques of media coverage of the U.S. wars against Indochina—Herman and Chomsky draw on decades of criticism and research to propose a Propaganda Model to explain the media’s behavior and performance. Their new introduction updates the Propaganda Model and the earlier case studies, and it discusses several other applications. These include the manner in which the media covered the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and subsequent Mexican financial meltdown of 1994-1995, the media’s handling of the protests against the World Trade Organization, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund in 1999 and 2000, and the media’s treatment of the chemical industry and its regulation. What emerges from this work is a powerful assessment of how propagandistic the U.S. mass media are, how they systematically fail to live up to their self-image as providers of the kind of information that people need to make sense of the world, and how we can understand their function in a radically new way.

42. They wouldn't even show his NAME during the debates!
The candidates names were quickly presented at the bottom of the screen - except for Dennis' which took longer to show up and was turned off quicker - don't believe me? Watch the debates again carefully.

See how well Dennis Kucinich did? See how much applause he got and enthusiasm the audience showed towards him?

Media people - including I believe a NYT writer - have admitted they are playing down Dennis Kucinich because they don't like him. They are deciding (as "journalists") that they should favor some candidates over others, instead of presenting the fact and letting the people decide.

Kucinich ripped them a new one at the debate too.

44. But now its "out there" and people will notice more & more
what Dennis said...about how the media does what it does...it chooses the candidates....slants the news and basically just LIES to us by what and how it prints/televises.

It has been stated and now hopefully the media is a bit more on the defensive.

TRUTH WILL PREVAIL!!

GO DENNIS!!
:yourock:

Peace & hope

45. This is an abomination.
I don't support Kucinich's candidacy, but if this doesn't prove the media is biased, what does?

48. Of course the media is biased
The NY Times will do anything to protect their own power. Do you see them covering the same news as in Indymedia, et al.? Of course not. They spoonfeed the sheeple the spin they need to protect their own interests.

49. they've admitted to ignoring DK because they think he's "dangerous"
There was a thread in GD not long ago that quoted some heavy hitter "journalist" types on how they didn't want to give any press to Kucinich because they didn't like his ideas, and that he would be "dangerous".

Instead the corporate media desperatly wants Dean, Kerry, and Clark to "out centrist" each other, and attack each other in public.

As usual, whenever he gets a chance, DK bitch slaps the media whores right across the face.

50. NYT & WP continue DK blackout
Adam Nagourney of the NYT apparently took the ignore Kucinich pill six months ago. He literally nevers mentions Kucinich except in the occassional last paragraph fringe candidate kissoff. The Washington Post is almost as bad. The most substantive coverage of DK in the NYT and WP were stories in NYT Style section re house parties and in WP Food section re DK's vegan diet. But as to coverage of DK's serious platform they avoid that like the plague lest people take DK seriously. Tragic.

64. Perhaps they need some Kucitizens
to stand outside their offices with signs, etc., protesting the "blackout" and encouraging a boycott. I don't think they have to worry about a boycott, but shining a public light on their practices in regards to candidate coverage might net some interesting results.
