44. Did any TV channel air the speech in its entirety this AM? |
|
A couple of the cable channels aired parts of it, but I wasn't sure if any channel or network aired the whole thing.
Did you get a chance to see the whole speech, questions, etc.?
I'm just curious.

3. Listen to that virulent HATE SPEECH!!!! |

Maybe it's just me, but Dean has never appeared "hateful" or "angry" to me. It seems like he's just laying it out and avoiding "dressing it up" in more PR-like terms.

Childish to post this in a Dean thread? Yeah. Just like it was childish for someone to post this in a Clark thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=916933(The exact kind of thing that makes some Dean supporters reflect so poorly on their candidate.)

I'm for Dean all the way, given money, attended Meetups.....
This speech was not him at his best or even close. I was surprised at how lackluster & offhanded his delivery was, after having seen him at campaign speeches where he is familiar with the message he's giving. Very few people are any good at reading speeches, and Dean is not one of them, if this speech is any indicator. I read the text beforehand and was impressed with the content, then saw the speech and was disappointed. A teleprompter might help, but he was just simply too unengaged with what he was reading. It was almost a few times as if he'd never seen what he was reading before. He seemed impatient to get it over with. He's got to get to know the speech better in important addreses like this. ... Having said that, his answering of questions after the speech shows him at his best. He is determined, engaged, compelling and convincing. He believes and means what he is saying and his knowledge and commitment come through strong and clear.

I'm not looking for fire & brimstone, just more connection between the man and what he's reading. I was first turned onto him through a 15-minute tape of questions & answers that a friend had given me from a local radio show. I could tell right then that he was a fighter and believed what he was saying--two qualities I was looking for in a candidate. If my first intro to him had been this speech, I wouldn't have been impressed. Why say, Oh, policy speeches are dull by nature? Why not improve and make the most of them?

Policy speeches are made to get support from the stoic, politico crowd. They're sorta dull themselves so you have to speak to your audience, if you follow me.
I'd suggest that you read any policy speeches rather than watch them if you find them too tedious to follow. Stick to watching rally and stump speeches and interviews and reading the policy stuff.

I understand they are necessary and are by nature not full of fireworks and arm waving. Nevertheless, he can and should learn to deliver them with greater engagement. Over and out.

41. Your meaning is understood and relevant. But Dean is not |
|
very comfortable when he's scripted. And this long speech, by nature, had to be scripted.
That's why you saw him break out of the script from time to time.
I thought it was great.

43. I felt the same way, but like Karaoke says, |
|
its a policy speech not a rally. In response to questions, he's very dynamic and spontaneous, but reading from his notes was long and he stumbles a bit. The content is the important thing and it was good.

32. It's a formal speech--a long one. It has to be read. |
|
But it's funny: he can't stand having to read the whole time and breaks out of it a few times to go off on his own.
I'm sure this was planned. It was very effective.

And after CSPAN aired the speech and the questions and answers, they showed video of Dean with supporters (various places) and then threw in the deer-in-the-headlights video of Chimpy.
We have to do everything we can to get Dean in the White House. He is brilliant, articulate, colorful, and passionate.
An aside: one of the first comments from the so-called reporter at the Washington Post was that Dean is the "darling of the left." It was no surprise, then, that he later stated he normally covered the Bush* administration for the Post.
