Will Libya's declaration make * look like a great statesman?
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 11:18 AM by A HERETIC I AM
I was wondering how Libya's declaration re: their WMD programs would be perceived Internationally, more than anything. I realize the freepers will eat this up and claim their man has his finger on the pulse of trans-global relations. I am more curious how folks elswhere will see this. Will they see this as Bushco have a tremendous international grasp of things or will they see it as merely serendipitious timing and/or Libya afraid that the president is just nuts enough to invade them (Libya) too?

Of course, it appears the Libyans have been working towards this for years so i am quite sure the Bush Admin. had little to do with starting this ball rolling.

Thoughts, anyone?

2. You can be sure that it will be touted as one of his
great successes in the war on terror and foreign policy. This will be used in the upcoming election in an attempt to show how Bush is better in reagards to foreign policy. It may be an effective ploy if the Dem we nominate has no experience in regards to foreign policy. We could also point to the fact the Bush had no experience in these matters before taking office and I really think he's made some serious mistakes that we could hammer on. But you can bet that foreign policy matters are going to be a big issue in the coming election. People are going to be asked if they feel safer with a guy like Bush at the helm.

8. Here is the logical flaw on the part of *&Co.
that will never be pointed out. Prior to the invasion we were told over and over that UN inspectors wouldn’t be able to find the WMD in a country the size of California, and Saddam couldn’t be trusted to turn them over. Even today we are told that the reason none have been found is because they are so easily hidden.

To believe that all the WMD in Libya will be destroyed one would also have to believe that Muammar Gaddafi is a trustworthy leader, but why would we think that? Or are weapons programs easier to find then the administration says? Both can’t be true.

But who cares, this lie will be the truth like all others.

3. doesn't matter
no matter what happens Bush and his minions in the media will spin it as a tremendous victory for Bush.

If Gaddafi had set off a nuclear explosion it would have been spun pro-Bush.

Unfortunately for Bush, the realities out in the world and here at home are quite different from the spin. That is why Bush is doomed.

4. Not really

It moreso makes al-Qaddhafi look like a hypocrite, trying to buy off those he used to rightly thumb his nose at with flattery and offers to sell off Libyan oil. Instead of kissing up, perhaps Libya should file a suit against the US regime (ruled still by the Reaganite criminals who were originally involved) for murdering dozens of Libyan civilians while they slept and handing out medals for it afterwards.
On the other hand, read in another piece about Libya's giant construction project; perhaps they just need the money for that at this time more than standing up for other things.

5. The obvious counter to that
...would be to spin it as proof that Clinton's 1996 sanctions (ILSA) and executive orders worked.

12. My question was both tongue-in-cheek and serious.....
Please, please, PLEASE dont for a minute think that i believe Shrub is a great statesman. I dont. I merely used that expression in the subject line of this thread to ask the question regarding what the rest of the world might think about it. Thats all. Please, believe me. My Father was C.I.A. and i lived in Europe in the '60's and Australia in the '70's. It is possible have a better grasp of what certain international opinions might be than our president. I merely wanted the points of view of the DU'ers that were interested in this subject.

No "Break" is necessary and none given.

11. Does anybody have any information on the alleged
connection between Libya and North Korea? I remember something about North Korea selling WMD's to Libya back during the Clinton administration, but can't find anything on it. Also, since we killed one of Gaddafi's children among other mayhem, does anyone think he is our best friend now? Bush really shouldn't think so.
