If we must fight to the death.... |
|
Let us fight as "democrats" - not Democrats. Let us fight for "democratic" ideals - not Democratic ideas that change with the wind and are untrustworthy except to the monied interests that fill their coffers, just like they do with the Repubs. If we must change our Party, let's do it correctly. Let's not accept the status quo. Let's make a radical change.
This is not meant to be a tirade against the Democratic Party. This is to say that if we must lose, let us lose honorably. Let us stand for ideas of freedom, human rights, respect for other peoples, healthcare as a right of every American, a job for every person that wishes to work. Let us return to the Party of the people. We do not have to accept the compromise of Republican sympathizers. Let's stand for something as a Party.

Why would some accept the status quo, when we see that mostly as selling out to the highest bidder? Why can't we expect our elected leaders to do more than change according to the latest polls? Why can't we expect some action on the things which have been lacking in America for almost my entire lifetime (universal healthcare, a full employment economy, elimination of tax loopholes and true progressive taxation)?

If we stand for real change, then at least we have a story to tell other than 'vote for the guy who's not-quite-Bush'.

6. "Mejor morir a pie que vivir en rodillas" - La Passionaria |
|
"Better to die on one's feet than live on one's knees." Dolores Iburruri (La Passionaria) Valencia, Spain 1936
I've been a registered Democrat since 1965, but I've never been a "yella' dog" Democrat. I've voted against my party on two occasions and sat out one election in protest to their right wing (i.e. "moderate") stance. In most elections I've shrugged my shoulders, sighed in resignation, held my nose, and punched for the candidate with the (D) after his/her name as the lesser of two evils.
This isn't about party or party loyalty. It's about this country's future and it's effect on the rest of the world. Even though I may be voting Green in this election, (if one of the infamous 4 should get the nomination), I know that I'll be voting with the majority.
The "majority" being the people of the world that are suffering under the yoke of American imperialism, whether it be openly in Iraq, covertly as in Columbia, by our hired thugs in Peru or Guatamala, or economically in virtually every third world country in the world.
If corporate imperialism is what America "stands for", what we send our armies to defend, than this country has lost it's soul.
We must try to regain it.
