1. Fine, here in the Bay Area
it felt pretty strong here, and lasted a long time. Nothing like the '89 quake, but probably the strongest one I've felt since then. Hope folks closer to the epicenter are OK.

4. Latest reports put the epicenter near San Simeon
Hearst Castle has been evacuated... the quake was centered roughly north of the coastal town of Cambria, about 190 miles northwest of Los Angeles...

Take care, Cali DUers!

How'd it feel in Boulder Creek? Kinda wierd here, long gentle rolling motion, all the lights swinging pretty good but you could hardly feel the house move.

... when all of a sudden I felt a bit dizzy. Looked up and noticed that the monitor and blinds well fairly swaying back n'forth. Wife and kids didn't notice a thing. Of course they and the cats are quite capable of generating a three pointer on their own inside the house.

These IDIOTS at MSRNC are interviewing people in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, instead of people up north..

That's like asking people in Virginia Beach, if they met any of the Titanic survivors at the dock, when they were rescued.:eyes:

27. Out in Woodland Hills
(which is in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, 40 miles south of Ventura), we felt a long rolling. If it had happened here, it
would have felt like a 3-point-something (we get a lot of them out
here; the Northridge quake of 94 was only four miles away), but
it went on for minutes.

Kept waiting for the crescendo, which fortunately didn't arrive.

I'm waiting to hear from a friend in Morrow Bay

which somehow seems counterintuitive. In 1989, I was on the second floor of an old Victorian in Sac when Loma Prieta went off, I definitely felt that one.

44. Orange County fell into the ocean!
It's drifting southwards. All the residents are worried that they'll have to learn Spanish and rely on brown people to help them.

George Bush has declared an Orange alert and the new island is to be called the "State of Orange" until we find out where it settles. If it lands in Mexican waters, Bush has promised a free tow back to San Diego where the Orangies will at least be able to continue to buy In'N'Out burgers without ever talking to a brown person.

45. I felt nothing, and
the San Andreas fault runs directly through my town. But it was apparently not that fault. It does explain this morning's confusion, though. I see it happened at 11:16; at that point, I was out ground- driving my 2 year-old filly in Leona Valley. This involves hooking her up in a simple rig similar to a cart harness, but there is no cart. I'm walking behind her, teaching her to stop, turn, etc. with the bridle in preparation for riding next summer. Anyway, we were out on the 1/4 mile track, walking calmly along, when she stopped. Her head came up, her muscles tensed up, and then she dropped her nose on the ground and sniffed; then tried to bolt in the other direction. She is not spooky; normally one of the calmest horses of any age you'll ever meet. I didn't let her bolt, so she tried to spin the other way. And cast herself on the ground, rolled over, rig and all, and just looked at me. Then she shook herself, got up, and tucked her head down with her nose against my chest, "hiding" from whatever upset her. She was shaking all over. I stood there with her for a few minutes, and then straightened her out and we went on. She was overly cautious, but no more upsets.

I'm further inland, so apparently it was only the animals that picked up on it.

Edited on Mon Dec-22-03 04:44 PM by SoCalDem
The media is great about never putting things into context.. They forget just how BIG California is.. This map can help give perspective to where the quake was and how close your relatives may or may not be..

MSRNC spent an HOUR interviewing people in the LA area..(over 200 miles SOUTH of where the quake actually WAS.

It always helps to have things put in the proper perspective. I know the big cities and generally am aware of the distances between, but I get confused when all the towns begining with "La" and San" and the different bays, valleys , mountains etc. are mentioned in one report. Just can't "place" alot of them.

50. Out of town
I am from the Bay Area but out of town for a week. I talked to a couple of friends who say they felt it, but no damage. A 6.5 like this would have been BAD under SF or LA.

63. Im pleased
For one thing, this means you wont be making (for want of a better word) "jokes" that make light of those who have died in these sorts of traumatic situations.

54. okay in Santa Barbara
Hey all - my first post on DU, but have been lurking for quite some time. Anyway, my only side effect this morning was a lingering case of motion sickness.

56. All's fine here on the Central Coast. This was the longest I've ever felt
It seem to go on for like 45 seconds or so.

57. Didn't feel a thing in West LA
This is weird because I know other people in West LA felt it, but neither my husband nor I felt a thing!

60. Fine here in Fresno
We felt it but nothing serious here. However, tragically, there are 3 confirmed deaths in Paso.

67. 2 dead in Paso Robles;
more injured.

Overall, less damage than some of the more recent big quakes. Which is good for property issues, but not much comfort for the family of those 2 women.
