Noncitizens put lives on line for U.S. (37,000 in US Military active duty)
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-immig28.html

More than 37,000 active-duty soldiers in the U.S. military -- including many regularly exposed to guerrilla attacks in Iraq -- aren't able to cast a vote or run for public office back home in the United States.

They are noncitizen soldiers, immigrants who have chosen to serve among the 1.4 million men and women in the four branches of the U.S. military even though they are not Americans in the official sense.

Thirteen of them have been killed so far in Iraq -- including two from Chicago's suburbs.

U.S. Army Sgt. Uday Singh, 21, a native of India who lived in Lake Forest, was killed Dec. 1 in an ambush, and Marine Lance Cpl. Jakub Kowalik, 21, a native of Poland who lived in Niles, was killed May 12 when an artillery shell exploded.
