25. That was well-said, nadinb.
It is also possible, as I believe it was with Ahnold, a true victory aided by chicanery, probably electronic. In the South, where Cyber Jim Crow seems to be strongest, there are "manual disenfranchisement methods", such as making sure the poor, black precincts get the most error-prone machines, felon-purge-list, focusing on black people with the same names as other felons being disenfranchised, etc, etc.

7. people power, by definition
(ok, my definition) is non-violent. just massive refusal to accept the takeover. if it worked against marcos, how can it fail here? but what does it take? our own media for one thing. every democrat with a camcorder needs to be out there. some pots and pans would be good, too.

9. I said that and someone got really mad at me.
Frankly if every right wing Bible carrying fruit cake in the country is at the gun show after church, we do not want to have less guns.Has anyone thought what the power base in this country will do when they wake up to the fact that WASP may run the country but they are less than half the pop. Powell has been used by this party badly. Hung out to dry at the UN and just put in the back ground but those days are fast going. And I am a WASP. We would all be nuts not to see that little power play of keeping people who had been in jail off the voting list. When we really know who they kept off and who did it.What will be the next voting group to go and for what reason?

27. Muslims and people with Arab-sounding names will be disenfranchised
this time around. Muslims endored * in 2000. They will no dount vote solidly against him this time. The BFEE will determine all their names sound like that of suspected terrorists. This is in addition to their on-going disenfranchisement of the African-American community. I don't look for that to stop in 2004.

10. Not quite
If that were even attempted, there would be a plurality of right- and left-wingers in the streets with weapons ready to take back the country.

12. Seems clear...
that the tree of liberty must be refreshed with the blood of those who believe in Democracy, just as Jefferson predicted.

We will simply have to have a revolt. If it isn't prudent when we can't vote anymore, when is it?

15. These dreams of people power won't come true.
Of the 60,000 people taken off the voter-rolls in Florida as "suspected felons" based on calculations the programmers themselves objected to as overbroad, 40,000 of them are off the voter-rolls to this day.

If people power isn't enough to get the voting rights of those Floridians restored before the election, do you think that after the election, when it's too late, people will take to the streets or something? It won't happen.

19. Revolt!
We have lost Democracy in that case. A revolt is neccesary by all patriots. The republicans cannot call us anti-american and themselves patriotic if we cannot vote for our goddamned officials.

Time to throw down in that case.

20. I don't think he'll take CA
hell will have frozen over if Bush wins CA legit. No one will believe it.

I don't think we have much to worry about IF paper receipts are given and can be manually counted. Every dem in EVERY state should write to your elected officials asking them to insure that ALL voting machines will give paper receipts. We have 10 months. A lot can be done in that way in those 10 months.

21. Well, for starters, we still have time to address the problem
If you are in CA, please attend the Jan 15 meeting in Sacramento when the next phase of the CA/Diebold audit will be revealed. There would be nothing nice than to see Diebold decertified completely.

And there are upcoming forums in Atlanta and Texas - dates/locations tbd.

Then there is HR2239 and S1980 - we need these passed, as soon as possible, and there are ongoing initiatives that you can help with.

1) Graham and Holt both want us to present endorsements of organizations who support these bills.

2) There are still 3 weeks until Congress returns to session, and we need you to go see your legislators (whether they have advocated a position on this or not) and express your concern. It's amazing how those people lose touch with what WE want when they return to the beltway. So go see them and talk about it.

3) Phone calls and letters

Details for all of these actions are at www.VerifiedVoting.org

OK, so let's say in a worst case scenario we don't get the bills passed, or they don't have 2004 deadlines, and we are facing paperless e-voting machines in Nov 2004...

a) Make sure EVERYONE you know gets out and votes. That means you must make certain NOW that they are all registered and aware of the importance of this election. So get involved in voter-registraion efforts, as this will help regardless of the e-voting issue.

b) There will be a need for nationwide election observers - everywhere we possibly can place them. I have heard rumors of people starting initiatives to organize such plans, but have not spoken to anyone who is really doing it. Someone needs to OWN this project and start making progress.

www.VerifiedVoting.org and www.BlackBoxVoting.org both have the ability to provide passionate volunteers as crew for such an effort, but somone really needs to develop the plan, create/distribute the instruction guides, and plan the whole action. This is a major undertaking, but it is worth it. Anyone want to take this on?

Look, I'm just a programmer who heard about this, so I built the site for Dill and a few other folks pitched in and are helping. In 6 months we have made amazing progress. My business has taken a hell of a hit, but this is too important to ignore. Same deal with Bev's site - the folks running it are just like us, passionate about the issue and are MAKING the time to get it done.

My point is this: More people need to step up to the plate on this, and the sooner the better. I have got to believe there are people out there with an idea on how to organize a training program on what is needed for pollwatching and how to do it. I'll guarantee you if a plan is submitted that is cohesive and well prepared, there are folks who feel passionately about this and the necessary funding is almost a no-brainer. There are groups like the Jaycees, and LWV Chapters who might be approached about helping provide bodies. LWVUS is positioned against us, but a heck of a lot of LWV members are passionately on our side. So please, think about it, form a plan, and step forward. America needs you!

Now whatever you do, please keep in mind that this is seriously a non-partisan issue. Don't frame this as a partisan issue, or we don't get the bills passed. And seriously - it is NOT a partisan issue. Anyone can lose with these machines, simply through program error or system malfunction, and we have instances of both sides losing in recent elections.

Let us know if you have ideas, questions, etc.
