If you are in CA, please attend the Jan 15 meeting in Sacramento when the next phase of the CA/Diebold audit will be revealed. There would be nothing nice than to see Diebold decertified completely.
And there are upcoming forums in Atlanta and Texas - dates/locations tbd.
Then there is HR2239 and S1980 - we need these passed, as soon as possible, and there are ongoing initiatives that you can help with.
1) Graham and Holt both want us to present endorsements of organizations who support these bills.
2) There are still 3 weeks until Congress returns to session, and we need you to go see your legislators (whether they have advocated a position on this or not) and express your concern. It's amazing how those people lose touch with what WE want when they return to the beltway. So go see them and talk about it. 3) Phone calls and letters
Details for all of these actions are at www.VerifiedVoting.org
OK, so let's say in a worst case scenario we don't get the bills passed, or they don't have 2004 deadlines, and we are facing paperless e-voting machines in Nov 2004...
a) Make sure EVERYONE you know gets out and votes. That means you must make certain NOW that they are all registered and aware of the importance of this election. So get involved in voter-registraion efforts, as this will help regardless of the e-voting issue.
b) There will be a need for nationwide election observers - everywhere we possibly can place them. I have heard rumors of people starting initiatives to organize such plans, but have not spoken to anyone who is really doing it. Someone needs to OWN this project and start making progress.
www.VerifiedVoting.org and www.BlackBoxVoting.org both have the ability to provide passionate volunteers as crew for such an effort, but somone really needs to develop the plan, create/distribute the instruction guides, and plan the whole action. This is a major undertaking, but it is worth it. Anyone want to take this on?
Look, I'm just a programmer who heard about this, so I built the site for Dill and a few other folks pitched in and are helping. In 6 months we have made amazing progress. My business has taken a hell of a hit, but this is too important to ignore. Same deal with Bev's site - the folks running it are just like us, passionate about the issue and are MAKING the time to get it done.
My point is this: More people need to step up to the plate on this, and the sooner the better. I have got to believe there are people out there with an idea on how to organize a training program on what is needed for pollwatching and how to do it. I'll guarantee you if a plan is submitted that is cohesive and well prepared, there are folks who feel passionately about this and the necessary funding is almost a no-brainer. There are groups like the Jaycees, and LWV Chapters who might be approached about helping provide bodies. LWVUS is positioned against us, but a heck of a lot of LWV members are passionately on our side. So please, think about it, form a plan, and step forward. America needs you!
Now whatever you do, please keep in mind that this is seriously a non-partisan issue. Don't frame this as a partisan issue, or we don't get the bills passed. And seriously - it is NOT a partisan issue. Anyone can lose with these machines, simply through program error or system malfunction, and we have instances of both sides losing in recent elections.
Let us know if you have ideas, questions, etc.
