I will point out that for the US of 1973 this was a theater of the cold war. Gromyko and Kissinger, as much as I dislike Kissinger, were having very high level meetings... and soon after October, OPEC eased up...

Now we may know why... neither did the Soviets or US wanted a nuclear exchange, we did come that close to midnight in October of '73

THis was part of the Cold War, and though the results are similar, the reasons for it as slightly different. Our Neo Cons will not back down, but realists would, if the mere threat achieves the goal.
