2. basic geology!
People focus too much on short term bursts of activity like we have had lately, which I suppose is intuitive because it is immediately experienced, but overlook the long term big picture. On the geologic scale of time, 2003 will hardly be remembered in and of itself for being a cataclysmic year. Individual years and clusters of quakes in similarly short periods of time don't even come into play very much when speaking in terms of geologic patterns and time.

Making any immediate assumptions about the recent spate of quakes is dicey for the layperson.

And how global warming comes into play for earthquakes, well, I hope that was a joke... but it beats speculating that weapons were behind it. :tinfoilhat:

Earth changes its spin, baffles scientists

BOULDER, Colorado (AP) -- In a phenomenon that has scientists puzzled, the Earth is right on schedule for a fifth straight year.

At the National Institute for Science and Technology in Boulder, spokesman Fred McGehan said most scientists agree the Earth's orbit around the sun has been gradually slowing for millennia. But he said they don't have a good explanation for why it's suddenly on schedule.
.....

Possible explanations include the tides, weather and changes in the Earth's core, he said.>>

Scientists are baffled! -Obvious-, isn't it, that Bush has been testing his EarthQuake machine?

What other explanation could there be?

6. Very true.
That said, my thoughts go immediately to Iran's location and the countries to the east and west of it. There may be a correlation.

Or look at it this way: Imagine Nevada (pretty sure it's Nevada) and Arizona being bombed steadily for two years. I'm guessing that California would wake up one morning in the ocean.

Who knows, just a thought.

12. Nevada and Arizona *are* bombed steadily
Large portions of both states are bombing ranges. For decades, underground (and earlier, above ground) nuclear tests were routine in Nevada.

Yet California remains locked to the continent.

4. Hmmm
I was noticing all these quakes in the news too.
I don't know what to make of it,myself.

I do know alot of the oil has been sucked out of this earth, maybe just mabe The oil had a purpose for being in the Earth instead of burnt up in cars? Nobody asks this question it seems. What natural function does oil do for the health of a planet?
People too often tend to assume this planet's resorces are for human exploiting. But thankfully some people are rethinking this exploiting game. But it might be too little, too late. I gotta wonder, what if "resources"we use like oil or certain stones, have a function we are oblivious to..Is there a non-anthrocentrc reason concerning the way rivers naturally flow, the habits of certain animals,or the way land "lays" or 'grows" when it starts having forests..Maybew all of these "resources" are not"ours" to use up and taint to our whims..Maybe the oil,the land, the timber, the animals, the gold..ect.ect. has a function that is important and quite independant of what we might want to use them for.And because we myopically, stubbornly and selfishly see fit to consume, control and destroy so much of this Earth we totally depend on..So maybe because the Earth is trying to balance itself with half it's flora, fauna and resources gone it comes out violently? because WE will not balance ourselves the earth must balence us to balance itself to live..I think our living home is doing what most bodies seem to do when they get sick, get a fever(global warming),I feel alot of these quakes and stuff are happening because Our Earth IS alive and it is trying to shake us out of our delusions. We are becoming or have become because of the way we choose to live,a danger to this planet. Our consumer civilization and ourcorporations and military and business is like a deadly parasite(like a cancer) that is killing the planet and ourselves off. We are living in a way that is so horribly out of balance, and unsustainable, for us to collectively maintain this delusion we have to deny we have destroyed so much.Sadly our huge vunerable egos blind us to what harm our exploitative way of life does to the planet we share with others.
What will it take for us to get woken up from this bad dream and re-learn how to cope with each other and live like human beings, without relying on corporations, government ,consumerism, rulers and the veneration of"big Men" getting in the way of our collective and planetary healing? It just might take wiping most of the civilized animals out of existance ,for we with this way of life we live, have become collectively such an unatural out of control species..our civilizations are cancer-like dangers to the life of a PLANET.So what would a sick planet do to save itself? Eliminate the infection or mutation making it sick.

Just some thoughts..

we are getting lots of earthquakes because we removed the oil that was making the tectonic plates slippery, now that they're sticky they make for earthquakes cause they break more. Ducking now - sorry. Couldn't resist.

10. with the Iranian quake,
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 05:19 AM by Aidoneus
it was India's fault--their subcontinent is too eager to get deeper into Asia.

The thousands of people murdered and the rubble of destroyed buildings--those are due to American wars, the earthquakes have a more natural cause.

9. If you were to look at where Iran is located...
You'll notice it's in the Middle East(duh). From my geology education, the Middle East is made up of many microplates. That land over there is very unstable. It doesn't come to me as a suprise that earthquakes happen over there all the time.

As for Indonesia, again, it's located on The Ring of Fire. Indonesia is located on the south-western side of the Pacific Plate, so once again, it doesn't suprise me one bit they get quakes. Not only that, the islands themselves are volcanically active-which can cause major earthquakes.

As for California, the state itself is separated by the North American Plate(east) and Pacific Plates(west). It shouldn't come to anyone as a suprise that they get earthquakes.

We need to stop blaming something else on the cause of earthquakes and hold plate tectonics and volcanism as the forces of nature that are responsible for earthquakes. Let's take off our :tinfoilhat:. :)

most of them were thrust up in the air due to massive plate tectonic collisions.

And this happened before there was man, or a republican party, or anything!

Earthquakes can trigger off other earthquakes on different fault lines as things shift around. There is nothing mysterious here, just the Earth doing what it does.

I'm a flat earth society member, so I'm not supposed to use those words, but some people actually believe that the Earth is ROUND, and that the core is MOLTEN, and that there is a THIN LAYER of CRUST which we live on and that the crust is CONSTANTLY MOVING and creating mountains and and and.....it's just too confusing for me.

Damnit, the earth is flat. Otherwise, we would fall off.
